Hi folks

My colleague here in Mongolia husband needs heart surgery, and she has asked what the best hospital is in bangkok for it.

There is an office here in Ulaanbaatar for bum rung rad, but she doesn't know if it's the best or not as it markets heavily here and she has been told that bangkok hospital is very good, but she is obviously really worried about it ad it needs doing asap

Any advice I can give her today would be great.

Bumrungrad is fine and well equipped to do all types of heart surgery but cost will be very, very high. Depending on the type of surgery, US $10 - 20,000. Also note that it is important to choose the right doctor. Dr. Samphant is highly recommended if open heart surgery is required: http://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Samphant-Ponvilawan If stent placement or angioplasty only, then recommend Dr. Visuit http://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Visuit-Vivekaphirat

There are some less expensive options to Bumrungrad . If this is just stent placement or angioplasty, I would recommend Dr. Taworn at Bangkok Christian Hospital. It is is a CABG (coronary artery bypass)or valve repair/replacement (i.e., open heart surgery) there is a good surgeon at St Louis Hospital but I would have to check around for the name.

A friend of mine had heart surgery at Bumrungrad and was very satisfied. I also understand that Bangkok Hospital has specialist facilities.

Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok has a dedicated facility for last few years but all major hospitals will have cardiac departments. BH will likely cost in same range as Bumrungrad - know our Thai neighbor had emergency bypass several years ago there and cost was in excess of one million baht (at least that is what they said). Phyathai 2 heart center seems to have good reputation for less expensive alternative among Thai and also treats international patients.

Thanks folks.

I know she wants the best treatment possible, but I also know that the cost will have to be factored in.

I've spent the afternoon reading up on it in here, and there are a few recomendations for other hospitals as well.

Sheryl if you could find the name of the doctor at St Louis that would be great.

Also, I've just found that flights go from UB to Chaing Mai now via Seoul, which puts that as another option for treatment.

What are the hospitals like up in Chiang Mai? I was reading that the prices can be considerably less, but still have excellent care at the hospitals up there.

The only hospital in CM I would trust for this is Chiang Mai University Hospital, a government hospital. It is fine but the red tape and language n]barriers involved in using a government facility will be a significant barrier for a foreigner coming from abroad. Costs would not differ much, if at all, from a government hospital in Bkk (where same problems apply).

I'll revert to you shortly re name of the surgeon at St Louis. Meanwhile can you supply some indication of the type of surgery, as this does make a considerable difference?

Wouls also help to know the patient's condition, i.e. is he hospitalized (and if so, how stable?) or still able to function at home. And lastly, do the couple have any Thai friends/colleagues who might be able to help translate for them (pretty much essential in the initial stages if using a government hospital as opposed to private).
