lovelomsak
My stepdaughter appears to me to be more interested in showing she is in control of her own demise than anything else. I would like to explain. A few months ago my stepdaughetr wanted a cell phone {the daughter is 14 years old }, So i told her she could have one but spend no more than 10,000 baht. We went shopping, she found the phone she wanted but it was 16,000 baht I told her that is more than I will spend. She said if she doesnot get that phone she doesnot want a phone. She still doesnot have a phone to this day.Has to borrow freinds phones to make calls. Her older brother started university at Rangsit and received a new honda wave to get around. She felt she should get a new motorcycle too.So ok we decide to buy her a new Wave also. But no she wants the 125 mini bike that uses a clutch.I ask the wife can the daughter drive a bike with a clutch. She said no she cannot. I said why buy her the bike ? Wife replies she wants that bike, simple. Then I ask does she have a drivers license that agian was no. So we told her she gets a honda Wave or nothing. She said she would think about it. So now no motorcycle. So here was a 14 year old girl who could have had a fairly good mobile and new honda Wave, but has nothing because she didnot get exactly what she wanted. I think her friends must get tired of her borrowing their phones and driving her everywhere. She wants to be in contol so much she cuts her nose off to spite her face. Times like this I am happy she is a stepdaughter not my flesh and blood. My big question about this is Is this behaviour common among young people?
Popular Post transam
She would be driving illegally at 14. At 15 can drive a 110 cc bike until 18, 125 after. If she had an accident you would be in deep doo doo. My wife gave her son her Honda Airblade, nice bike. He would not use it cos someone had a trendy bike . She bought him a trendy bike of which l am not happy about.
Popular Post canuckamuck
A 14 year old should have 1500 baht cell phone, if any, and should not be allowed to drive. I would say she is helping you out, with her attitude.

Popular Post slapout
At 14, the stepdaughter is going to try to work the system to get what she wants or what her friends tell her she wants. Her attitude toward material things and how to get them, will be shaped over the next few years by you and her mother. The kids try to play daddy against mother, pouting, threatening, screaming, silent treatment, etc Set the rules/conditions, keep them fair, be consiistent, and hang on for the ride.If you and her mother work together, the finished product (maturity) could be your pride and joy.

MrRealDeal
Yes the behavior of wanting decent stuff is quite common amoung all people kids included , the behavior of parents being douchebags and not allowing them the decent stuff they can easily afford is less common. Hope that helps

Berkshire
When I was 14 (in America), I wanted these pair of sneakers that all the other kids had (Converse All-Stars). My parents refused and bought me a cheapo pair of K-mart specials. Didn't go over well with the other kids at all. That really, really pissed me off. It's amazing how we remember these things.

Home, food, love and the opportunity for education were enough for me. But brand name stuff didn't exist much when I was a kid (apart from Coca Cola).

Popular Post NanLaew
My oldest stepdaughter wanted a phone, she got one, about 1100 baht if I recall. The younger stepdaughter also got one because her big sister had one. Again about 1100 baht. Two months later, one is broken and the other was 'stolen'. Both because some 'friends' did it. That was about 2 years ago, no phones (out of my pocket) since and nobody is complaining. If you give kids expensive shit, you are a mug. Grown up's expectation of having iPhone's and iPad's and all that other techy <deleted> that 'friends' can't live without is bad enough without starting the kids on that track.

No. Your just a dick that thinks money is everything. The Op offered a mobile up to 10,000b. That's not cheap. There are many decent phones at that price..same for the bike.. teenagers need to learn the value of money for when they grow up and earn their own. Popular Post ABCer
It is not about money parents can afford to spend. It is not about kids having good taste or knowing what they want. It is about kids growing into adult life with a right attitude. And the first right attitude - needs and wants are different. Until they are standing on their own feet - they need a place, food, clothing, TLC and good education. Anything more than that backfires on them (psychologically) and on parents (financially). The second right attitude - whatever you want extra - earn it one way or another. Any other way - you are bringing up a brat! And a future parasite. They will be a burden to parents, their future wives/husbands or society. Quite often to all three. I must admit I was disgusted by brats before I came here. Always and in every country.
