I can not speak for Pattaya but I had mine removed at Vejthani here in Bangkok about two years ago and all inclusive price was 100k.

Your gf can have this done for free under the Universal Health Scheme (or Social Security, if she is employed in the formal sector). She has to do that at the hospital where she is registered or, if that hospital is not able to perform it, then at a higher level hospital that they refer her to. This last situation is quite likely in the case of thyroidectomy since it is specialized.

The quality of care in government hospitals is good and nothing is to be gained by doing this privately, just unnecessary expense.

If she is registered at a hospital far from Pattaya (often the case) she will either need to change her registration or else go back home for this.

Since she apparently knows she needs her thyroid removed I would assume she has already been seen by a specialist somewhere?

Hi

thanks Sheryl and all: she went to Pattaya memorial and they had some doc name Thanapat Tipayamani sorry spelling is wrong for sure but he at least seam to know what he was doing, ultrasound, blod test and there was a small cyst they took sample on and send to some lab in Bangkok to check for cancer but its was a good one,not any cancer. She have here name in Siracha so a little bit away but can sure be arranged to go there at the goverment hospital.Little bit bad experince in her family with goverrment hospital make here not trust them but this info here help for sure so thanks.

Btw the price asked at Pattay memorial was 70k b.so maybe not that bad after all.But like you guys say,its almost free in Goverrment hospital so way waist money if not needed.

Thanks all

Will be interesting to see what the govt hospital docs say as to need for the surgery, what you describe (a single benign cyst) does not sound like it would warrant thyroidectomy.

Agree that removal sounds strange. In my case even with one half totally growth and other side having many smaller attempts were first made to reduce size medically. My other question would be on the cancer check - if normal thin needle as I had believe there must be three types of cells collected to be definitive and often this is not the case (at least I seem to recall reading such when undergoing treatment)? But even with me they tried to leave enough to function (although it did not so add another pill to daily routine).

One of the advantages of government hospitals (in addition to being free for Thai patients) is that they have absolutely no incentive to provide unnecessary treatments or surgery. Whereas private hospitals do. Not that every doctor at a private hospital would do this -- fortunately most would not -- but the financial incentive exists.

Hi guys

Well I would say its my gf that want it removed as its a bumb on here neck small and hardly visiable imo. First time they took samples inside the cyst, like a small peace of meat and I cant really say what they test for in Bangkok.

They also drained the bumb I call it so it was all alomost gone but then it slowly got back, not big butshe is scared.

The doc did not say anything about need to remove it and to give credit to him he told her if she want to that, do it a goverment hospital as that was free ,that idea came more strongly from my gf now after 2 month and its became a little bit bigger again.

Can you guys tell me what medicine she could eat to reduce the size?If any. The doc If I understand the storie correct say that no medicine could reduce the size becuase of the cyst? She have no other issue than cosmetic looks and worrie about getting cancer. Its some time hard to get all the facts beacuse of language issue.

She will go to goverment hosptial for sure and guys thank so very much for taking time to answer me.

First of all, there is a difference between removing a cyst (usually done by needle aspiration) and removing the thyroid gland itself. The latter is a major step that will require taking hormone replacement for the rest of her life with regular blood tests and adjustments to meds. I don't think any reputable doctor would perform that in this case.

Thyroid cysts do often recur after aspiration. repeat aspirations are often done, and sometimes ethanol is injected into the cyst site as a means of preventing recurrence. These are all outpatient procedures with no incision or removal of tissue other than the cyst contents.

Whether or not medication is indicated/would help depends on a number of factors including her thyroid function levels. This is a complex matter and not something that can be diagnosed over the internet.

Surgery is not usually indicated for benign cysts, but it does depend on several factors, including whether or not i t is a pure cyst or a cyst mixed with solid tissue. As above, not something that can be diagnosed over the internet.

The following are guidelines on the management of thyroid nodules, will give you an idea of the complexity:

Sheryl, thank you so much, very much. I need to read more but sounds like start with remove the cyst, and this should the doc suggested I guess. The cyst was found on ultrasound before she had aspiration (had to check wikipedia what it means lol)

I think we need to go to a doc that are good in this area and wonder if any one can be recommended? To get a real diagnose from a specialist is now the most importent step. privat or goverment doesnt really matter in this case.

Thanks again Shery

Go to Somdet government hospital in SIIRRAACHA,arrive at 7 am and get into the system first and then the front desk will refer your girlfriend to the appropriate specialist.can be a bit of a wait, but the doctors there are quite professional.,and the costs are minimal..

Forgot to add,go directly to the outpatients building directly on the left as you enter the hospital gateway.the doors open at 7 am,and there are normally many people queuing,so if you arrive earlier than that you have a better chance of been seen by the doctor in the morning, after registering etc,you can go to eat outside, then go back in at 9am as most doctors start to arrive around 9 am onwards..

If she is register3ed at Somdet, then it won't cost her anything. If she is registered at another hospital in Sri Racha she should go there first and they will refer her onward if necessary. (Possibel that Somdet would also have to refer onward).

As said before, nothing to be gained by going private except unnecessary expense and a little time saved. She has already had the necessary diagnostic work done from the sounds of it. Important to bring those records with her especially the biopsy results of the initial cyst aspiration.
