webfact
PM Yingluck mulls 'Rubber City' for ThailandBy English NewsBANGKOK, Sept 6 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra today floated the idea of a “Rubber City” for Thailand as a long-term idea to help shore up falling rubber prices.Chairing the Joint Public-Private Committee (JPPC) meeting, she said the Board of Investment (BoI) would be ready to offer promotional investment privileges for the development of the rubber industry in Thailand.“Manufacturers of rubber products can be located at a single industrial estate to create a “Rubber City,” she said. “Research on rubber by the National Science and Technology Development Agency could be utilised by the private sector.”The JPPC meeting was attended by economic ministers and local rubber manufacturers.Deputy Commerce Minister Yanyong Puangrach said rubber prices have dropped to the lowest level at Bt60/kg and surged to Bt75-76/kg while smoked rubber sheets are Bt80/kg and exported rubber at Bt95/kg.When the global economy gains strength in Q3 and Q4, rubber prices will be higher, he said.Industry Minister Prasert Boonchaisuk said Thailand produces 3 million tonnes of rubber but local consumption is only 500,000 tonnes, adding that the private sector would be encouraged to invest more in rubber-related industry.Several investors have applied for BoI promotional privileges – a move which should increase rubber consumption to 800,000-900,000 tonnes next year and a million tonnes in 2015, he said.Transport Minister Chatchart Sithiphan said asphalt would be used to pave roads nationwide and the government’s planned Bt2 trillion infrastructure development would also use at least 200,000 tonnes of rubber.Lakchai Kittipol, Thai Rubber Association honorary chairman, said rubber price intervention would lead to “addiction” and growers should be led to understand that the skyrocketing rubber price in the last few years was due to price speculation.Rubber prices surged from the bottom level in May, and China has promised to continue buying rubber from Thailand but not at the same price as a few years earlier.Yiam Thavarorit, chief executive of the International Rubber Consortium, said the strengthened economies in Europe and the US and China’s relaxation of its financial policy could lead to higher rubber prices, of at least Bt90/kg, later this month. He urged rubber growers to wait until later this month or next month to sell their produce. He said Thailand has coordinated with Indonesia and Malaysia to jointly create an ASEAN central market, based on the model of the Agricultural Futures Exchange of Thailand, to ensure rubber prices in accord with the global market and economy. Khun Jean
That's what you get when you promote a product, like her family member did. The 'rubber saplings' story..... Maybe a way to increase the rubber price would be to change a lot of those rubber plantations to something else. Coconuts went up in price, i wonder why.... Popular Post MESmith
Everybody plants rubber trees & wonders why the price drops. Same with lamyai trees in Lamphun. Everybody plants them, price drops....... Repeat for most things. Everybody opens a corner shop & wonders where the customers are. Probably sat in their own corner shop wondering where the customers are......

ray23
Welll guys when they throw acid on cops, I wouldn't give them the time of day. They simply have went to far. Thailand doesn't control the price of rubber. Rice at least people eat that. This is sounding more like extortion then protests. Thay had a lot of farmers in our area to switch to Palm oil trees. Government paid for it to get bio fuel. It seems like the tail wagging the dog to me

scorecard
No mention of latex prices in terms of the actual farmers. No mention of whether Thai latex is competitive on the world market. But hey, let's start another sector where the taxpayer props up uneconomic industries. Could be another 'captive audience' for the manipulation game too.

johnnie20110
“Manufacturers of rubber products can be located at a single industrial estate to create a “Rubber City,” she said. Would the Shinawatra family's real estate company be the current owners of the industrial estate that is selected for Rubber City?
Bluespunk
"Yiam Thavarorit, chief executive of the International Rubber Consortium, said the strengthened economies in Europe and the US and Chinas relaxation of its financial policy could lead to higher rubber prices, of at least Bt90/kg, later this month. He urged rubber growers to wait until later this month or next month to sell their produce." So he's suggesting they hoard their rubber until the price goes up and then flood the market which will lead to a price fall one assumes. Great thinking son.

RickBradford
Every time she speaks she decreases the sum total of human knowledge Solution Tell them to grow something else To be honest, you didn't add much to the sum total of human knowledge with that post. Rubber trees take from 5-7 years to mature from planting, and the investment in getting them to maturity is substantial. To suggest as a 'solution' that Thai farmers rip them up and 'grow something else' on their limited land is completely .... well, not adding to 'the sum total of human knowledge', shall we say.
