Americans!

Featured Replies

There seems to be a lot of people who like to attack Americans here. I want to know why?

Did you come to America and have a bad experience?

Did Americans show up in your country and give you a hard time? If so, how?

What Americans have you met and in what situations?

Thank you for your time, Thaibebop.

As for myself, it's mostly piss taking, nothing personal. There are also numerous counts of alleged soapdodging by Brits in this forum and us Germans are not spared either...so if tere's a cliche to jump on lots of people do it and I don't excluse myself from that. :o

do you really not know why?

the biggest economic power and the only super power is always likely to create resentment even if they behaved perfectly- plus the self rightious notion that they are the greatest democracy in the world (wrong on both meanings of 'greatest'!)

a nation that happily goes to war but total moral panic breaks out when a singer accidently exposes her nipple ring on TV.

plus intervention in the following places - that has left all these countries (and others) worse off

Iran

Cambodia

Indonesia

Cyprus

Guatemala

Laos

Vietnam

Grenada

Cuba

Chile

Nicaragua

Panama

El Salvador

Iraq

They play cr*p sport that no one else likes.

Country and western music.

Having said all that most Americans i've met have been some of the most friendly and generous people. But it helps to take the frustration borne out by the government/culture on innocent individuals!! :o:D:D

Yes, most people are smart enough to separate government policies from individuals. However, there are an awful lot of very arrogant Americans running about, always comparing things when they travel to the "right way" they are done at home. Other nationalities do the same thing of course.

and not only do they come across as arrogant americans, but it could likely be pinned on the way of their bringing up, which says more about their upbringers than about themselves. They don't seem to have other notions. This superior attitude possibly stems from their fairly recent declaration of independence and has been brought down throught he relatively few generations.

We've all at some time, liberated ourselves from others. I like to think the pride has worn off over, say the last 72 generations.

\And then add on this sprinkling of attempts at world control to fuel the hypocrisy.

An awful lot of people aren't that smart enough to make that distinction. Quite an number of times when travelling in Thailand I've had Europoeans start giving me an earful about all the evils of America as soon as they find out that I'm an American. After awhile they'll often throw something in about "nothing personal against you as a Yank". It's really crass behavior, and while it may not be "personal" it certainly is often personally directed. Next time you meet a yank and start talking about how arrogant yanks are, ask yourself whether saying that to a yank that you meet at random is any less arrogant than the stereotypical yank behavior you deplore.

I agree kd that is very rude behavior, it has happened to me on many occasions (I am a Yank). I usually say I oppose Bush, which I do, and that often shuts them up.

The Americans I met in America were almost without exception kind generous and decent people. I think the problem lies in the assumption that's drilled into Americans that their country/democracy/way of life is the 'best'. As an example it must be slightly galling as an Iraqi to be lectured on civilisation by US soldiers when the first known city in the world was established in UR 2600 years before Christ.

If we're going to have porn banners in Bedlam would it be possible to have a few big todgers for us gayboys? :o:D:D

Well, first I should say that I posted this in one of the community forums and the mods moved it. I don't know why though. :o

I knew that if I posted this Bedlam there would be no point. I know most of the guys and gals of Bedlam have, shall we say, been around the block and are a little smarter than the average poster. I take most of what I hear, that's anti-American here as a joke more than anything and could care less.

I have encountered many newbies, below 500 posts, that are serious about their anti-American comments. So, I wanted to know what the h3ll any of us did to them to make them hate us so much. I wanted to see what would be said, for I am sure that they would have little to no actual experience with Americans.

Well, I started the Traveling thread in Bedlam for this propose, howevre I was being stupid because I didn't want to post it in Bedlam but forgot that's where I was. So, I went outside and posted this, then it got moved here.

So, you can ignore the traveling thread, it really doesn't mean much and was a mistake anyway. As far as this thread goes, I know that most here are just playing around and it's really no big deal. I don't want anyone here thinking I am mad or out to mess with ya. Some of those newbie, yeah, but not the Bedlam members. :D

Instead of starting a new thread I will just attach it here.

Is there any point to defending yourself, your country, or anything else that identifies a person?

I am not talking about defending a point you or someone else made, like you would in any debate, but someone says Yanks suck! or Brits are gay!, whatever, should you try and defend this thing that is apart you.

Or should you just say, that person is an a$$hole and move on to greener pastures?

actually, I would refer to that person as an ar$ehole and move on. :o

Not at all Thai related maybe?

We usually trash off topic threads dealing with US politics or similar. I decided to move it here instead.

Its sometimes very hard to resist. Not merely because of the attack, but because such posts are usually so badly written and/or show how little the 'author' actually knows about the topic.

I always pass myself off as a Canadian or Kiwi or some other Farang when overseas these days... :o

Not at all Thai related maybe? :DCome on, cdnvic, I'm not that stupid. I posted it in the Farang Pub forum along with threads like What are you listening to now & Thread Killer & Can you guess tha song & Don de Maktub'ar thread. Shall I go on? Not Thai realated, :D .

Yes, I know you do, but this isn't politics. This was to understand why people, mostly Brits, are choosing to verbally assault Americans on this forum. I was tempted to aid questions about why the mods choose to ignore such behavior and why when any of us Yanks post anything in return, we get in trouble, or our threads get molested in some manner with lame excuses about not Thai related because it's Ameican politcs.

I know you want to avoid any serious fighting out in the General Population. That's why you moved it here. Fine, okay I'll play along. I really wish that if you are serious about keeping such conflicts to a minimum that us yanks might see some support out there. I mean a guy threatened to kill me because I suggested that some people who had bad attitudes should put sugar in their tea! This guy posted a link to how to enjoy proper British tea along with the death threat. I mean it's tea! Well, he just couldn't have a yank telling him how to enjoy his tea. Danm pushy Yanks!

I hope you understand why I posted this in Farang Pub and not here. I would also hope that after our history you would just tell me the truth. I think I can handle it. :D

Whenever I send food back I'm sure to let them know I'm Canadian.

TBB, they all hate us because they are all jealous of us! :D:D

You know what I'm talking about, Bro. :D

Maybe that's the more maddening aspect of such posts. You know this person knows nothing of your people and counrty and yet they speak like they have a PHD on the subject, well without the command of any spoken langauge that is.

I am begining to think that if I want to have fun where I go and come back alive I should lie. My grandfathers would kill me for saying that! :D

Tbb - this kind of topic never does well outside a group who know each other. In a general public setting somebody on either side is in a bad mood for some reason and the flaming starts.

Whenever I send food back I'm sure to let them know I'm Canadian.

I let them know that I'm Australian. :o

You're right Aughie. I just wanted to make the point that these people didn't have any solid reasons to hate Americans. I wanted to do in a nice way by listening to their responses and then say see, you've never been here, or that was an isolated event, or what have you, to try and show them that they are being fools. I know if I flame back it just gets worse.

Well, I tried. Maybe I am the fool for thinking I could make a difference to these cats? Oh well, on to greener pastures, eh? :o

Ouch, no wonder the poor guys have such a bad name. :D

Tbb - I'm not going to change anyone's mind. Only television can do that. Besides this is a predominately Queen's English board and taking the piss from what I have learned is one of their pastimes. :o

chuchok - The same goes when not leaving a tip. I talk about the Quebec Nordiques or the Edmonton Oilers all the way out the door.

If you look at my posting history you'll find in such situations I often stick up for my good neighbours to the south, and even their boob of a President sometimes.

Whenever we fart in elevators, we start whistling The Star Spangled Banner. :o

I used to try to pass myself off as a kiwi, but I kept blowing my cover by going to work. :D

Oh, that's just going too far, you should never have to do that. I mean, it's Bush! :D
