Foreign Credit Cards

Featured Replies

I bought something the other day and didn't have enough cash, couldn't see any ATM about so paid for the item with my foreign credit card. The cost of the item was about 8000 Bhat. They just swiped my card and asked me to sign. There was no chip and pin or they didn't ask to see any I.D. I could have been anybody walking in with the card. This got me thinking, if I lost my card the balance would Max'ed out in no time. Are all credit card transactions in Phuket like this?

Yes,TIT. But if its a foreign card you would not be liable to your cc company if you report fraudulent use. Thai cards do not afford the same kind of protections. Actually, if fraudulent use is reported, the store would receive a charge back from the cc company. They would loose, you have to wonder why they don't protect themselves, better? TIT

The only time I ever used my credit card to buy something in Thailand, I ended up with someone spending US$10,000 on my card.

There was a slip and the staff must have sold the card number with the security code.

Never buy stuff with your card. If I didn't have enough cash and there wasn't an ATM around, I would forgo the purchase.

Got all the money back from my British bank.

I wouldnt have used my credit card if I had of known that the pin didn't need to be used. Unbelievable that its a case of swiping the card and asking you to sign. Not even any I.D. Its a Prepaid Credit Card for travelling so there's only a small balance on it and it cant go into debit, but I still wouldnt have used it if I had of known.

The security code is not on the slip.

Its similar to passports in Thailand. I have swapped passports with a friend before clearing immigration and security at Phuket International. We both went straight through to the boarding area where we were checked again. And they still didnt pick us up. No one gives a crap when they check

No, but it;s a three digit number on the back of the card. Easy to remember and to jot down on the slip.

It's called the CVV number. (Card Verification Value)

It's the wild Wild West.I don't use cards in Thailand, except for the ATM.Ya can be in your home country and find out your card has been used by other persons.

I agree. This is why I normally keep only a few hundred baht in my savings account for use by my ATM card. When I need money, I transfer the money from a second savings account and then quickly go to the ATM to get the money. This also protects me from unexpected debits to my ATM account by unscrupulous internet vendors.

If it's a UK credit card you are protected from fraudulent use.

I hardly ever use my credit card. Last time I used it was 4 months ago for go daddy, but last month deductions were made by facebook. Money has been refunded, but this fraude happens anywhere.

Using pins for credit cards is only a relatively recent change (2-3 years). Thailand will start using them ... in about 10 years.

The prepaid travelling credit card has zero balance now. So I cant get scammed on that card. Wont use that card again and wont make that mistake again. I was being charged 150 Bhat every time I made a withdrawal at the ATM. If I opened a Thai Bank Account would I still be charged the 150 Bhat everytime I made a withdrawal.

If you opena Thai bank account on Phuket, and used the ATM card, on Phuket, there is no fee.

If you use the ATM card outside of Phuket, from memory, there is a 10 baht fee.

Incorrect.

If you open up a Thai bank account and use that bank's ATM anywhere in Thailand, there is no charge.

If you use another bank's ATM, then there is a 20 Bt charge.

Incorrect, first 4 uses out of province are free, then a 20 baht charge

Doesn't that depend on what bank you use?

I haven't noticed any charges out of province if I use my bank's ATM.

I thought it obvious that if you use one bank's ATM card in another bank's ATM, there would be a fee, so, yes, you are correct.

I am quite sure when I have used my Kasikorn Bank's ATM card in a Kasikorn Bank ATM, in Bangkok, I had to pay a fee. I was under the belief that this fee was because I was outside of the Phuket province, where I opened the account.

Why would that be obvious?

@ stevenl

"I thought it obvious to the OP because that is the norm in western countries as well."

Is it? Eurozone no charge. So with a Dutch ATM card I can withdraw free of charge in Italy at a different bank.

So to a big chunk of western countries that is not the norm, and I would not be surprised if also in other western countries it is possible to withdraw foc at not-own bank.

Best in Thailand to use a Thai bank credit card and they wil SMS you any tranactions

I have used a foriegn credit card for transactions but never again

I have a 100,000 credit on my SCB credit card and leave 200,000 baht in account with SCB to have this credit

The bank keeps the account passbook

When outside of phuket province the bank charges me a fee if i use my ATM card to withdrawn money

You thought wrong.

I use a Kbank card in a number of other bank ATMs with no fee.

Ok. I will stand corrected on this point.

However, I am quite sure when you use a KBank card in a KBank ATM, outside of Phuket, if you opened the account in Phuket, there is a fee.

Yes. Any transfer of money from one province to another, whether it is from account to account or from account to ATM, will incur a fee. That happens for most (if not all) banks here.

A quick google reveals this:

AEON Bank do not charge fees for the use of foreign ATM card in its machines. Its have few offices, mainly inside Big C or Central Plaza.

Not in my experience:
A few months ago, I was on holiday in the USA with my Thai girlfriend. We had been using her Thai credit card and someone spent over 5000 Dollars in Ikea and Sears south of L.A. while we were just south of San Francisco (with her card in her handbag.) The nice Thai credit card people refunded the money in full, after about a month.
Also: Three or four times, I have bought stuff in Central using her card. On one occasion I signed the slip Mickey Mouse – no problem.
