Lost car key

Hi,

This I weekend I lost my car key and do not have a spare. I have searched the forum and there seems to be a lot of people who have lost bike keys and had a new one made from scratch by local locksmiths. However, I have not seen anyone saying the've had this done with a car. My vehicle is a 2003 Toyota Sport Rider and the key looked like a basic key with no remote or anything like that.

I've tried visitng locksmiths on Samui but as it's a Sunday most of them were closed and the others couldn't help. Please can someone tell me if they have had a new key made for their car without a key to copy?

Look in your maintenance manual (so you have) if there is a sticker with a number for the key. Without any reference they can only change all the locks.

In theory it is possible to make a key from the lock.

If your doorkey is the same as the steering lock, you might be lucky,

Thing is, someone has to open the door, take out the lock from the LEFT door, because that should be more original as the right door.

But that should not be a problem for a locksmith, a real locksmith that is.

Or your friendly local car thief might open your door for you.....................

That said, maybe it is not that handy to drive around in a car having no spare key?

First thing I ALWAYS do for a new/newly bought vehicle is to make a new (third) key, which is stored in the safe along with the Tabien Rod. The good point is, the guy who does it for me can copy the RFID chip, too. Sorry, I guess this comes to late for your situation.

You don't need the physical key, there is a sticker with a reference number on the key, that is important. Best to stick that into the manual and keep with the car. They can always make another key based on the stored data. No point to program the key as it has to be changed after you lost it.

If you know who it was, the original supplying dealer might be able to provide the key code number and/or a key, but not remotely. You would need to visit taking along the car's log book as proof of ownership. (phone 1st to ask if its possible). As has already been said, the new chip in the new key chip will require programming in.

Edit: My experience of working for a main (Ford) agent was many years ago. I tend to forget that now records are held electronically. So any (main!)Toyota dealer should be able to look up the key code from the chassis number.

Thank you for all your help and advice. In reference to the chip that some of you have mentioned, I don't think there is one. The key is just a basic metal key with no plastic housing. Or is there a chip inside the metal key? Sorry for my ignorance.

I have since spoken with a friend who had a new key made for their old car by a mobile locksmith. As I said in my previous post, I have heard of several people who had this done when they lost all their motorbike keys. Is this possible?

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. Just to let you know I have got a new car key via the method above. It turned out that it did not have a chip. Quite impressive to see the guy get into my car, take the door and lock apart, and then make me a new car key right there using just a file. In total it took about half hour and cost 800 THB.

Hi, I will post his details in the tradesmen topic. As for getting the misus to do it, I'm not sure it'd would have made a difference. Her Thai is no better than mine.

However, I did get a Thai colleague to deal with it. To be fair the guy had to drive from Chaweng to Maenam and just to get one of those keys cut at Big C is 160 THB. Anyway, I was happy to pay as Toyota said they'd charge me 3000.
