Quite common in the West, if you have some issues to resolve you go and see a good councillor for a few sessions. My Thai GF has some insecurity issues due to lack of parents and love when she was growing up. She I think could do with a couple of sessions with a qualified councillor but is there such a thing in TH? Seems the general thing is go and stay in a Temple for a while which might be a good short term thing but it does not resolve the underling issue(s)!

There are some expat options in Pattaya but Thai counselors are a rare breed, only ones I know of are in Bangkok. Otherwise what there is, are mostly pyschiatrists who deal with serious mental health issues. As you note, psychological counselling is not commonly sought or understood in Thai culture. Does your GF feel that she wants it? As that is critical, this is not something you can push on someone.

If she herself feels a need for this then see this thread for some locations in Bangkok with Thai therapists http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/90910-mental-health-resource-list/

P.S. corrected spelling in the title

Thanks for the info. I think my GF would appreciate a mentor or a good friend or some one who is qualified. But to go to BKK for an hours session would be out of the question. I can listen and guide her when issues arise. It would have been nice to have someone else who she is not emotionally attached to so not to cloud any help I offer in resolving family relationship issues or concerns.

PS. Many years ago we English travelled and explored the world and found many wonderful lands and cultures. One of them was North America. We settled there for a time and then had to leave. However over time they have mutated some of the high English words we gave them and " councillor" is one of them.wink.png

Actually even in British English, councillor and counsellor are both words and with different meanings. The US- UK difference is in the number of "l's" in counsellor/counselor.
