JakeBKK
I have to say I had it. The staff at every 7:11 is polite, and speaks English or Thainliusgh. Respect for that. Fine to Me.I don't have an issue with cold war allies. But the rude, uncivilized Russian (Uzbekistan) crowd coming in this year..... Some body want to buy or rent a condo on the cheap?

arunsakda
It cant be rudeness, just some kind of spatial disconnect with the common material realm. Oblivion. Perhaps they have achieved Satori already . There are no 10 people in the world, who would step off an escalator, just to stop in there in their tracks to cause a logjam, just to be rude. There would be easier ways .
KittenKong
What I want to know about Russians (or wherever they come from) is why are they always buying pillows? Is there something wrong with the pillows in the hotels/condos in which they stay? Or is it just some major Russian pillow shortage about which Putin is keeping the rest of the world in the dark? Popular Post petercool
Most have grown up in a tough unyielding environment with little or no knowledge of other cultures and thus other ways to act in social settings. In some ways I sympathize but it can get annoying when you come from a very different background where queuing and general courtesy tends to be the norm.
kevozman1
What i don't get is that quite a lot of the Russians use Pattaya as a kind of family/couples resort. Now, I am no hater of Pattaya, but that it is not the place to bring a foreign girlfriend to, especially not your children. Kind of reminds me of that movie Taxi Driver when Travis Bickle brings his girlfriend to a porno for a first date. bangkokstick
Rude Chinese are not a problem because they do not look like us, farangs ! The problem with Russian is that they are farang just like us educated people from developped countries, so Thai might think that we all are the same

wooloomooloo
Chonburi will always attract those less fortunate in the art of manners. It's a paradise for some and hell for others. I like it for a day or two and that's my limit. I'm safe in the knowledge that the majority of the less cultured won't be moving north to the provinces anytime soon. What would they do for entertainment?

onemorechang
Not seen the pillow thing myself But could be a cheap way to provide some form of comfort to guests in the condo they rent for the drinking bouts they have in their rooms with family and friends, as they seldom drink in the bars. Drinking with friends and family would be normal behavior in the condos in their home town. Only a guess by me. They are rude people most of the time. What's that about? I can't speak for the Russkies (Though I am one, a generation removed). But for me, I need 3 pillows on account of a bad back. 2 for my head, and another one for under my chest. If I stay in a typical Thai hotel, I have to share 2 skimpy pillows with the GF and then I'm 2 shy. They're cheap enough that I have left dozens behind in hotel rooms over the years. And I've stayed in a family oriented Jomtien resort that caters to Germans and Russians and I wouldn't hesitate to bring my family. They're delightful, dedicated family people. But I could live my entire life and never miss seeing another Speedo. Edited November 7, 2013 by impulse

I can understand this but the latex pillows the Russians seem to buy (and there are a lot of dedicated pillow shops/stalls all over town which seem to deal only with Russians) are relatively expensive and not the sort of thing I would buy and throw away a week later. You can get a decent Hollofil pillow for under a couple of hundred Baht in any Thai market and that would be more like the sort of thing I would buy to use for a week or two and leave behind, or indeed use daily for a year or two. Maybe there is a Russian latex pillow tax that they are avoiding by buying here? Very odd.
Jingthing
Yeah, my impression is that they are buying the latex pillows to bring home, that they see them as very cheap here. That's understandable but they must really LOVE those latex pillows! I've had good access to latex pillows for as long as I can remember and never felt tempted. impulse
I get what you guys are saying, but if I just paid $1000 for a R/T ticket, and I'm paying $100 a night on a hotel- during my precious 2 weeks of vacation time, I'd gladly sacrifice $50 for a pillow if I can't sleep without it. And if it makes it back home, that's great. But if if doesn't, it's still $50 well spent for a week or more of sleep to salvage a vacation. Perhaps they use latex at home, discover that's not what the Thai hotels provide and reluctantly go out and buy what they need for proper sleep? Then if the pillow fits in their luggage, they take it back home. Any Russians tuned in with some insight?

Last time I was there though the place was still a huge red light district. Unless an army of police and bulldozers were stationed to Pattaya in the last few years then I have trouble seeing how it would have changed too much. If Patong has more girlie bars and gogos than Pattaya I would be absolutely shocked.
ARGUSEYE
In summer this year I did a looong motorcycle ride through western Russia, entered at the Baltic and left through the Georgian Military Highway in the Caucasus mountains. One of my missions was to find out if the Russians in their homeland indeed are as rude as they seem to be in Pattaya. To give the verdict right away: THEY ARE! Now, to be fair... I came across a few very nice and helpful people. But the majority came across just as they do here in Pattaya. After a few days of travelling I adopted the polocy of "as little contact with the natives as possible", because I was shouted at almost instantly by everybody if I tried to ask for directions or for the price of something in English. (I don't speak Russian) To get petrol and buying supplies at a mom and pop store was challenging enough. I decided to camp out in the countryside in order to avoid asking those DRAGONS posing as receptionists in hotels for the room price. Rude, rude! So.... Why is that? I put my money on the exposure to 70 years of communism. That's done them in, and they didn't recovered yet. The long, dark, cold winters don't help either. And by the way, if you look at the "beaches" they have at the Baltic and the Black Sea, you understand why they think they are in paradise at Jomtien.

sojourner007
I'm Russian by origin but often wondered myself at Russian tourist love for latex pillows or mattresses. Those compatriots I know personally (but all of them live in the West now) have no interest in that stuff. So, to answer the question, I googled in Russian about why Russians love latex. The results suggest that Russians firmly believe latex bed products improve health and better for sleep than conventional ones filled with synthetic fiber or feathers. This is apparently because latex pillows: do not cause allergies, are made of natural substance, prevent bed mites, have superior orthopaedic properties, and prevent snoring. I remember that latex pillows were not available in the USSR before its disintegration. Even though almost 25 y have passed since then Russian provincial tourists, which represent the majority of Russian tourists in Thailand, perhaps still cannot get enough of these consumer 'luxuries'. And health worries are very common among Russians.
