Had some great times in there donkeys years ago. Molly Malones too. Oddly enough I had one of the best Thanksgiving dinners ever at Scuffy's last year. Only good thing I can say about Bangla road. A shame if it's gone.

Saw that it was gone yesterday..... pity. The music was quite good at times and you could watch the rugby without too many idiots. Good barman as well, always remembered your drink even after a year of not visiting.

It was bloody annoying having the condensation from the air con vents dripping onto you as you sat at the bar though... poor design.

this should also be a reminder for people who buy a house on the 30x3 year, once your lease is up you either pay up or get out.

A 30x3 year lease if its legal is 90 years

A 30 year lease will see the majority of retirees out, you cannot take it with you

People who can afford to lease do not worry about what may or maynot happen in the future

People who lease in Bangla road should know there is a good chance there lease will not be renewed in the future.

Well it wasn't a 30 yr lease anyhow.

The rent was deferred for a fixed period after the tsunami

Then re-calculated to pay over the remaining time frame.

It wasn't honoured for various reasons although the MD tried in vain

So the land owner decided not to renew with the Management Company .

Hope that clears it up chaps ..

I'm very surprised to hear it is closed because just a couple of days ago a well known raconteur and expert on all things Patong stated he frequents this bar!!

Agreed, there are a few "legitimate" bars on Bangla Road that do well, but they are in the minority. I frequent them also. Scruffy Murphy's and The Aussie Bar. That said, I have seen them a lot busier in the past than what they have been in recent times.

Thats business and happens everywhere in the world not only Thailand

Gungcelyon is a good example, look at the businesses closing down there and being replaced by new businesses that can afford the increased rents

He is claiming Scruffy was not very busy, for sure right on that one.

"Sharp" seems to be on the ball!

Did hear that they were initially looking to transfer to the "new" Soi Eric, because of the rent increase, but it didn't happen.

Mention of Jungceylon........I see the "Absolute Pub" has closed, with thick chain and large padlock on the main door suggesting it was the landlord's doing!!

Hasn't been busy for a few years now and wonder how it lasted this long.

Yes. Haven't been out on Bangla Road for a few weeks. Sad to hear this place has closed. I stand by my previous posts, the last couple of times I was in there, it wasn't busy, despite heading into "high season." The big Australian themed bar next door was the same..

The live music was great in Scruffy's and the air conditioning was a nice break from the humidity.

As stated before, I expect to see many more Phuket "icons" close in the next 12 months.

It's this "high season" that will give an indication of how Phuket's local economy, which relies on tourism, is failing.

I heard another Irish Bar looked at Soi Eric but the same problem as u discussed... Rents... As for Scruffys if the rent was paid as agreed they would be there still unfortunately the powers that be put paid to that... It's a great shame not having am Irish Bar on Bangla doesn't seem right...

Anyway, come to Thailand and eat Irish food? I can understand a better beer, but, is Ireland known for great cuisine?

I mean cottage pie, right? Is that Irish, bland mashed potatoes over ground beef? Last time I had that I asked for the prik nam plaa.......covered the thing in chillis.

I'm not sure what the pre-requisites are for an "Irish Pub"...it seems to be that they have some green paint but that's about it.

Not surprising its stuck away in a corner with no passing trade

A good idea for the Thai landlord would be to turn the site into an Irish Bar. smile.pngsmile.png

Need to sell a lot of the black beer to cover over 300k baht pm of overheads!!!

Overheads and fix costs wasn't the problem If "management fees" are taken out after and not before

Enough said I think

Sorry "Sharp" not clear whether you are referring to Scruffy Murphys or the Absolute Pub?

Or, you could simply charge 200 baht for a bottle of Singha. :) :)
