Protesters told to avoid involving monarchy, army in political conflicts
By English News

BANGKOK, Nov 30 – The Thai army chief has called on anti-government protesters to refrain from using the monarchy as a political negotiation mechanism or coerce the army to take sides in the conflicts.

In an official statement released yesterday, Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha referred to protesters of the Students and People Network for Thailand’s Reform who intruded into the army headquarters and demanded that he clearly announced his stance in light of the political disputes.

Gen Prayuth said the army was obliged to protect the nation, religion, monarchy and people, and should not be pressured to take side in the conflicts.

The army has never followed any unlawful command while protesters should not instigate people to resort to violence – an act which could escalate conflicts in the country, he said.

He stressed that the army has avoided clashes with the people which may lead to injuries or deaths but that peace-keeping operations will be strengthened if the situation changes. (MCOT online news)

North hit by cold spell as south braces for more rains

BANGKOK, 30 Nov 2013 (NNT) – Several provinces in the North have been hit by cold spell, while provinces in the South have been warned to brace for heavy rains.

According to Chatchai Promlert, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department Director-General, the high air pressure coming from China is blanketing the upper part of Thailand, causing provinces in the North, Northeast, East, and Central plain to experience a drop in temperature. According to him, the temperature has dropped 5-7 degrees Celsius, with the mercury in the northern area plunging as low as 16 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the southern provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat have been warned against forthcoming rains during December 2-3, caused by the low air pressure coming from the South China Sea. The director also urged residents in risk-prone areas to be on alert for flash floods.

For those in need of assistance, please call 1784 twenty-four hours a day.

DPM: State offices still open despite ongoing protest

BANGKOK, 30 Nov 2013 (NNT) – The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of national security has asserted that all state offices are still open as usual to serve the people despite the ongoing protest and seizures of government buildings.

During the “PM Yingluck Meets the People” program on NBT, Deputy Prime Minister Pracha Promnok said even though the Government Complex and the Ministry of Finance have been occupied by the anti-government demonstrators, government’s services to the people will be carried on as usual. The DPM admitted that the increasing tension of the current protest could sabotage the country’s image and have a negative effect on the tourism industry.

Meanwhile, National Police Chief Pol General Adul Saengsingkaew said it was necessary that the Internal Security Act (ISA) be extended in order to enable police to maintain law and order as well as preventing all possible violence or interference from a third party.

The ISA has been imposed throughout Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan and Lat Lum Kaeo district of Pathum Thani until the end of this year.
