BANGKOK, 5 December 2013 (NNT) — Deputy Minister of Commerce and core-leader of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) Nattawut Saikua has expressed his confidence that amending Section 291 of the constitution will ease problems.

Mr. Nattawut stated that Suthep Thaugsuban’s attempt, in his capacity of the secretary-general of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), to establish a “people’s senate” was outright unconstitutional and undemocratic.

In the end, Mr. Nattawut pointed out, Section 291 would have to be amended to instate a constitution draft committee, which would later render a possible change to the entire constitution. However, this may lead to new tensions and conflicts, Mr. Nattawut acknowledged.

I think what he means is amending section 291 will ease the governments problems but will inflame the issue with the anti government protestors.

"Section 291 of the Thai Constitution (2007) provides for amending the constitution by the Thai Parliament (House and Senate) in three separate votes. Currently, the government is seeking to enact an amendment to change this section on how to amend the Constitution. The purpose is to create a new Constitutional Drafting Assembly (CDA) in order to draft an entirely new constitution, ergo a new government. The opposition argues that the CDA will be stacked in favour of the ruling party, giving it free reign to change the Constitution in its favour to obtain control over the newly formed government."

That is not what Suthep wants, the amendments of Section 291 of the constitution. What he wants is to put up his 'peoples council' a government without election and that is their government. Not people's government in general

Shouldn't that guy be in prison in the first place? As long as Thailand doesn't lock up people like him for good, there is no chance for progress. Thugs aren't supposed to occupy any public offices anywhere in the world.

Just reiterating what the government tried to do the first time around - amend the constitution wholesale to eliminate all the checks and balances, bring back Thaksin and usher in a new golden age of authoritarian rule by the Shinawatra family combined with unbridled corruption benefitting Thaksin toadies like this piece of dirt.
