Renal Denervation Treatment for Chronic Hypertension

Featured Replies

I read an article in an Australian newspaper describing a new treatment for dealing with hypertension. - The new treatment is called Renal Denervation, it is effective and is appreantly a simple procedure. does anyone know, whether any of the major hospitals in Bangkok are presently equipped to offer this treatment, and if so where is it available ??

Thanks heaps

roderick

It is by no means as simple or benign as you seem to think. It does have potential complications and in many countries (inc. the US is not yet an approved treatment but rather still in clinical trial stage). Even where it is approved for use, it is is reserved for people whose hypertension cannot be controlled through conventional measures.

It is done in Thailand, at Chula http://www.chula-cardiaccenter.org/en/component/content/article/36-news-moo/236-renal-nerve-denervation

You will note they mention it as used for "resistant hypertension" i.e. hypertension that does not respond to medication, salt restriction etc. Neither in Thailand nor anywhere else will you find a doctor willing to use it as a first line approach. It is a last-ditch measure.
