Recently finished a Clive Cussler novel,

I've just discovered Clive Cussler.. not bad if you want a pickup/put down book.. :o

totster :D

His earlier stuff was better. Now everything seems to be "co-authored" with Craig Dirko or Paul Kemprecos.

Too many instances of "perfect co-incidences" and "just in the nick of time" events. You know from the moment you pick up the book that the good guys are going to win and save the world, and nobody important from the good-guys will die.

Kind of like Louis L'Amour's old westerns. Feel good stories where the hero saves the day and gets the girl.

As for reading well :D . I have just finished a book about Lenny Mclean aka the guvnor. I have Jeremy Clarksons Auto biography saved for the plane in June. Just finished a book about Bernard O'mahoney, who was involved in supplying Leah Betts with the ecstasy that killed her. I have read Howard Marks Auto biography half a dozen times and i never get bored reading it.

I love anything by Stephen King and i also like crime books, like the story of the Kray twins and the old Eastend Gangs.

I am also reading lots of baby books, which i must say arent quite as much fun :D

I am half way through Environmental policy in an international context...University book :o

I have just finish the third twin by Ken follet

I have just started Las aventuras del capitan Alatriste by Arturo y Carlota Perez-Reverte ....they have made a film with Viggo Mortensen

Most things in general:

Stephen kings old books: the shine, cujo, Christine, It...

Ken follet: the third twin, the pillars of the earth, storm island ( the film is also very good)

Love Old classics: Gone with the wind, Pride and prejudice, Wuthering heights...

Terror: Frankenstain (sp?), Dracula, Allan poe books...The dream of Febre (not sure about this title in english)

Adventures: Captain blood, scaramouche, Le Bossu, Tarzan, The three mosqueteres (sp?) the count of montecristo...

Spanish and South american literature, travelling books, novels, mystery....

....I love reading so I just read whatever....

Fire from heaven, The Persian Boy and Funeral Games by Mary Renault. Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield. Plutarch on Sparta by...er Plutarch :o

Also Persian Fire and Rubicon by Tom Holland are worth a read - and Hannibal by Ernle Bradford. I'd better shut up now :o

I just started Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism by Michelle Goldberg. Want to get a good scare and see where the next Nazi party will rise.........read this book.

Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is a troubling, yet very good book.

Also read Land of Green Ghosts by Pascal Khoo Thwe, a member of the Burmese long neck tribe of Paduang. Fascinating insight into his life growing up, also very informative look at Burmas current military regime. Well written and interesting.

'Love Medicine' by Louise Erdrich

Anything written by John Fowles

'Weaveworld' by Clive Barker

'New York Trilogy' by Paul Auster

'A Winter's Tale' and 'A Soldier of the Great War' by Mark Helprin

'The Master and Margarita' by Michail Bulgakov

'A Winter's Tale' by Mark Helprin

During the first half, I thought it might be one of the best books I'd ever read, but halfway through it changed time periods, characters and direction; Lost me completely, I'm afraid. :o

I know, it lost me too; but I like being lost at times. The very first time I was in Bangkok, I got on the khlong taxi, changed three times and ended up in a neighbourhood where there were no other foreigners and I did not have a clue how to get back properly.

Always try to get lost when I am in big cities for the first time. Love the feeling of being small, insignificant and just taking everything in like a child trying to make sense of things.

'A Winter's Tale' by Mark Helprin just won a spot as one of the best American books of the last 25 years. However, I wasn't very impressed with the list in general, I must admit. :o

Really?

I honestly hadn't a clue it was that popular. I found it in the sales bin of a bookshop in Stockholm some 15-16 years ago, and thought it looked interesting enough to give a try.

I was very surprised to see it on that list as you are the only person other than myself who I've ever "met" who has read it.

I often bring it up on the subject of books that I almost loved. With the award and your recomendation, looks like I better try to read it again! :o

Anything by Carlos Castanada.

Booner

What ! do you like to read ? :o

I read 'The Master and Margarita' about thirty years ago. I'm going to have to find it again.

Boonie, you like Castaneda??? Well, maybe I shouldn't be surprised. Curious now, what else do you like in that genre?

Beware!

BoonMee has been possessed by the spirit of an evil twelve foot Corn-God (corndog?) and is promoting literature that will bring about drug abuse, escapism and destruction, and it is a threat to our Way of Life and Family Values.

:o

I still think that The (real) Gent has taken him hostage and is forcing him to write these things about being bored of politics, liking Aussie-rules football and enjoying Carlos Castenada.

It's the only thing that makes sense! :o

Actually, first encountered Carlos Castenada after a terrible bout of chucking my cookies following the ingestion of some dynamite Peyote Buttons...several years ago. Got into him big-time after that and need to reread his stuff.

BTW, where is the 'real Gent' these days? :o

In terms of science fiction I like the Dan Simmons 'Hyperion' series.

Castaneda = sci-fi??? :o

presently re-reading Hermann Hesse's The Glass Bead Game and wonderin' why it had fascinated me almost 40 years ago. It was on display at Asia Books and I bought it out of nought but nostalgia...maybe was recallin' playin' wid my then 16 year old girlfriend's tits while discussin' Hesse's intentions......

Castaneda = sci-fi??? :o

No, just drawing a parallel between Castaneda and some of Dan Simmons stuff - some good herb helps! :D
