Muay Thai schools in Chiang Mai

Recommended Posts

I'm keen to join a Muay Thai school and am quite committed (3-5 times a week). Am happy with full contact with a goal of amateur competition. I'm in reasonable shape, have a little martial arts experience and have sampled Muay Thai already over just a few lessons.

I'm living in Chang Phueak, 1-2km north of the old city.

I speak no Thai and though I'm keen to learn by doing, I'm not sure if I'm ready to start my training in a non-Farang environment.

I'd love to hear others' experience and recommendations.

have a look at this place http://lannamuaythai.com/ - not far from Phucome hotel.

my son did lessons there and had a very good teacher. one of the owners is a foreigner so language should not be a major issue

It looks great but 8000 baht per month seems like a lot. Is that typical?

Good place across from the rail station in the grounds of (and owned by) boss hotel. I think prices most places are pretty similar from having looked around.

Another near PP condo not far from station too, and one a bit out beyond Nong Hoi/mahidol junction with a thai man and Brit wife-who fights too!, .

Do you know the names of any if these? Have you used any?

Most gyms I'm finding advertise themselves as camps and have training twice a day. I thought at first the lessons would be open/appropriate to more casual trainees but I'm guessing now this isn't the case.

Lana Muay Thai seems that way. Is that the case?

Just get a book for 500 baht and teach yourself - easy, then go outside the Muay Thai gym occasionally and pick a fight to get free practice.

That is interesting advise. You might mention not to pick a fight with one of the many Muay Thai fighters that you could encounter in the city, because they will put lumps on your head faster than you can rub them. :-)

AFAIK you can do either formal camps or casual lessons, suggest you call or email to confirm.

Most gyms will be flexible, daily rate, weekly rate, etc, just go and talk to them and tell them what your requirements are.

Been to them all to check out for my son, and chatted to owners, trainers and coaches. Why not just do the same ? The first two are easy to find, once you find the station and PP condo, the Nong Hoi one is behind the international school on Mahidol. Get close, then ask-no problem.

-Thai Boxing training centre, Bossotel, station :0870029806

-Chay Yai, 30/17 Sunpaliang,Nong Hoi 0833011469
