Does anyone with kids ignore Christmas in Thailand?

Birthdays were not even celebrated or in any way acknowledged. Some of the neices and nephews were not even aware of their birthday.

Stroll on! Do some of you like live in the woods? blink.png

We keep it mellow--personally can't stand all the hype/commercialism/baby carols in malls etc--but if one has kids and doesn't make an effort for them on the day... well, double blink.pngblink.png

xmas is ok, good time for parties, except now the cops have roadblocks everywhere and want to stick dirty Breathalyzers in your face whether you have had a drink, no drink or too many drinks. I liked xmas when my kids were small, out of the mountains and down to the in-laws in the city, early morning rise and shine at 0 dark thirty (often with a hangover from the party the night before), son, daughter, nieces, nephews, wrapping paper everywhere, big smiles, laughter, and the Colonel's famous 'bloody Mary'. Nothing religious about it, the Colonel of Jewish decent, me of southern baptist and none of us ever entered the door of a religious facility or wanted to after we reached the age where the brain actually functioned. A different aspect was when I was still a "two week millionaire" down in Pattaya. As best I remember the most 'fun' I ever had at xmas, especially after kids grown, etc. Loved it. We don't do xmas here, although I did get xmas cards this am from the wife and kids. Ah now New Year is a different story. I like xmas here much more than I did in the states, even with the creeping commercialization. I don't see the nutty religion aspect of it here like it is back in the states. I just wish they would ban that damned Jingle Bells! Happy Holidays to all except the right wing troglodyte fringe crowd, to you-BAH HUMBUG!

Copied from my post to the other xmas thread.

Thailand has taken care of that, it's called Children's Day

For us is a day like another, except for the gift openings under the tree tonight.

Me and my wife are working, my kids goes to school...

Sure it's not a traditional Christmas as it had been in my childhood, but still keep a little joy for today.

And if it makes the kids happy for gifts, so it's still a good thing.

Today is Christmas day in Sydney, i am with my family, sister, and her three daughters, she is divorced from husband and our family is small but the others family is huge so the Christmas thing is really big,, i got up today and went down for a heart starter coffee but the kids were busily opening more presents that they had gathered from i don't know where, the house every Christmas looks like a toy store, more presents than they need,, then i think of all the needy children in the small villages i have been in and think what a waste of money, then later in the year my sister asks me if i can give her money for school uniforms or school shoes or school books or for school activities, so i think back on all the stupid broken toys lying around not being used,, i don't really like Christmas because of the useless spending when there are so many needy people out there....

Kids would really enjoy celebrating with all the traditional ways of celebration. However, parents should also be responsible enough to educate their kids of why this why that of all the symbols used in Christmas. Then maybe tomorrow, your kids will no longer believe in Christmas and instead celebrate the Ark Day during December! Mind enlightened! Christmas is a total hoax.

Depriving Children of Christmas,is taking away part of their childhood. And just because you are a miserable old skinflint.

And did you ever read Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" ?

Agreed. You are also denying kids the chance to experience part of your own culture.

I love Christmas, and it's sad to read all the negative comments about what a pain in the butt it is, or how annoying it is, or what a waste of money it is etc.

Christmas is about giving, not getting. I feel sorry for you guys that squeak about having to spend a little time thinking of others or whining about dropping a few bucks on someone besides yourselves. Seem like nothing but a bunch of selfish pikers to me.

I don't need a christian party to think about others or spend a few bucks. I do it the whole year.

Been in LOS for 9 years, this is the first Christmas we've celebrated. I think my "just turned" 4 year old can really understand/enjoy it for the first time and also my mother is here...she loves Christmas. watching him open his presents this morning was very special thing. Personally I have a lot of problems with Christmas and even more with Christians, (I come from a Catholic family) my favorite decoration is a stuffed Santa crucified on a cross, but if I dig into my memories I frickin loved it when I was a kid.

I can't deprive my son of that. I think you have to put away your personal baggage and take the trip with them otherwise your a bit of a hypocrite and selfish in the overall experience of Christmas your life.

It's a metaphor for the rest of your parenting.

I don't understand if you have a problem with Christians and Christmas then surely you are a hypocrite celebrating it.

I used to love smoking cigarettes and hashish when I was the same age as my 11 year old daughter. Should I introduce them to her?

What...the...<deleted>......did you just compare a child celebrating Christmas to a kid smoking hash?
