LOS ANGELES: -- Phil Everly of the popular Grammy-winning duo The Everly Brothers passed away Friday in Burbank at age 74.

The rock singer - who scored hits with All I Have To Do Is Dream, Wake Up Little Susie, and Bye Bye Love - died due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

'He fought long and hard,' she noted, adding that Phil's death was the result of a lifetime cigarette habit.
Along with his 76-year-old brother Don, the Everly Brothers still hold the record for the most top 100 singles by any duo in history.

During the height of their success in the 1950s and 1960s, the country crooners charted nearly three dozen hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Cathy's Clown hitmakers - who began as a family act with their parents Ike & Margaret - were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

After an acrimonious split in the early 1970s, the Everly's reunited in 1983.

11-time Grammy winner Linda Ronstadt covered the brothers' track When Will I Be Loved back in 1975.

Sad to hear. It's rather strange, I just found an old CD of theirs and was listening to it in the car the other week.

Very sad news.... my generation (and those since) owe a lot to Phil and Don.

Oh My what memories. 7th grade, Ford Jr. high, Ohio and deep puppy love for a girl named Cathy

Back in the mid 70's, living in Toronto and a friend said the Everley Brothers were playing at one of the airport strip hotels, I was doubtful but verified it as true. My wife and I drove out that Saturday night in a snow storm and walked into the room and man, there were about 20 other people waiting for the show to begin.

The Everleys came on and roared through a 90 minute set as if they were playing at Royal Albert Hall to thousands.

What a special night. The heavenly choir has a unique new sound added to its roster.

RIP.

Bye bye Phil.

You guys showed country and western and rock 'n roll fit hand in glove.

Well done.

Too bad -- AP report says his COPD was caused by smoking. In Post #1 Phil is on the Left not Right

RIP........Rumor is he was a heavy smoker

If you're ever in Central City, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, and you say "Don and Phil", everybody knows who you're talking about. They never forgot where they came from.

R.I.P. Love those guys. Unique, Unforgettable.

Memories....oh man....way off the charts....more words escape me.

Here's a video from 2004....

My first true girlfriend and I had many make-out sessions listening to the Everly Brothers in the late 50's. Back then I was a smoker too, like Phil Everly. Luckily I found a way to quit when I was about 30, not like my younger sister who died of lung cancer at 61 and my uncle who died at 59. It still amazes me to see people continuing to smoke, ignoring all the associated dangers of tobacco smoke.

RIP Phil.. and thanks for all the beautiful music!

A month ago, I was listening to a radio interview with Graham Nash (the high voice of The Hollies / Crosby, Stills and Nash). The Everly's were his heroes, not surprisingly. One evening, Nash was in a Canadian City, and one of the Everlys dropped by and asked the younger Nash to accompany them. Nash was on 7th heaven. Someone actually recorded it on a little cassette player.

I've been playing Everly Brothers music throughout the day. Bye Bye Love, Wake Up Little Susie, Claudette, All I Have To Do Is Dream (my favorite). Brings back a lot of memories. Whew, can't believe my age. How time flies....

Memories....oh man....way off the charts....more words escape me.

Funny thing. My daughter used to sing this sitting in the back seat of the car in 2006 when she was just 5 years old. She still loves their music and so do her Mom and I.

RIP Phil.

Along with Roy Orbinson yet another icon laid his head to rest. May he rest in peace and rock heaven to welcome the rest of us.

One last snippet of music history from me...

Hey sunshine51,

Many, many thanks for posting these great memories.

Cheers,

You're welcome....try & Google "Everly Brothers Youtube"...see what happens!

You'll be there for hours...I was. Good simple music played with real instruments

and a lotta soul & heart. Those were the days. If ya have kids (any age) be sure

they listen to this "old stuff" too...they'll inevitably come around...hah!

In 1969 my younger brother and I were competing in a Banjo and Fiddle contest in Southern California. It was a blistering hot Summer weekend and we decided to drive to the local market for some food and drinks. On our way, we passed an old couple in their 60's walking along the dusty road. We pulled over to give them a life. They got in the car and we all introduced ourselves. Their names were Falice and Budlow Bryant (sp?). We asked if they were attending the Banjo & Fiddle contest and they said yes, they were playing later in the afternoon. They said they were farmers in Tennesee and were part time song writers. I asked if any songs had been published and they said yes, the Everly Brothers did their songs. Almost every hit song the Everly Brothers did were written by the Bryant's. I asked how long it took to write a long play record of songs. Falice said the the Everly brothers would call them and ask if the had any songs and they would reply "yes" and then the two of them would sit down and knock them out in a day or two. They couldn't read or write music so the would just put the on tape. It was a real thrill to meet them and every time I hear "Wake up little Suzy", I think about that hot Summer day so many years ago.

Sad to hear. It's rather strange, I just found an old CD of theirs and was listening to it in the car the other week.
