BANGKOK: -- An Administrative Court case judge said Wednesday that the announcement of the “Must Have” rule by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) which mandatorily requires Free TV stations to broadcast live all the 64 soccer matches of the World Cup should be scrapped.

The above ruling of the judge in charge of the case between RS International Broadcasting and Sports Management and the NBTC represents the judge’s personal opinion and is not binding to the Administrative Court. However, in most cases, the court often ruled along the line of the case judge.

Mrs Pornphan Tejrungchaikul, CEO of RS in which RS International Broadcasting & Sports Management is affiliated, said she welcomed the judge’s opinion which is a good sign.

RS International is the sole concessionaire to broadcast the World Cup’s soccer matches appointed by Fifa in accordance with a contract signed with Fifa on September 12, 2005. It has already paid concession fees to Fifa.

RS International said that it was required to notify Fifa about its broadcast arrangement six months in advance of the start of the tournament otherwise it may lose its concession right.

As such the company said that the “Must Have” rule of the NBTC directly affect its concession right.

Sad day for football and sport in general when major tournaments such as this and the Olympics could end up on PPV only.

Why TIT? If Murdoch had his way you wouldn't have any decent sport on FTA TV.
