NomadJoe Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Like most beach areas, there are several spaces near Karon circle designated as "taxi/tuk tuk". About 7 or 8 taxi's parked there, some of them illegal black taxi's. I parked just outside of the tuk tuk area, and not on the red, but of course I get yelled at by a driver emerging from the tuk tuk sala. He tells me to park "Over there." "Over there" is a red curb. (See photo) So I say "Can I park there for just one minute?" in Thai. He mumbles and walks off. This kind of thing has happened to me countless times in Kata, Karon and Patong, and I have seen tourists and other expats get yelled at by the drivers for doing the same. After all the talk there seams to be no improvement! Very frustrating!! Mr. taxi driver in the background. The suggested place to park, a red curb: 1
Costas2008 Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I share your frustration........happened to me also. I'm not going to say This is Thailand otherwise I will get bashed. By the way......do you know who the Farang with the "polite attire" is on your 3rd photograph? 2

Popular Post LivinginKata Posted January 10, 2014 Popular Post Posted January 10, 2014 I expect we long stay people have all experienced this many times. I just don't take my car out where I know I won't be able to park. Can't remember the last time I dined out in Karon or Kata. I only go to places where I know I can park. 7
madmitch Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Karon/Kata tuktuks drivers seem to be worse than their Patong-based cousins. Note it was only Patong where the beach road clean-up was taking place, that the airport bus is allowed to Patong and not Karon/Kata and that Patong actually has motorcycle taxis. 2

Patak rd. through Kata/Karon has a few motorcycle taxi ranks, but very few. They are not allowed along the beach roads.

Are you sure, Joe? One set up near Karma Lounge in Karon a couple of years back. Closed a day later!

All the drivers sit at the Dragons Layer bar when the bar is closed in the daytime. I am certain there are others but not certain where. I will pay more attention when I ride through there in about an hour.
desmondspencer Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 funny how you would indicate to him that you are in the "right of way" one thing i do not understand.. if you see the majority of mopeds parked a "stones' throw away", pray tell why didn't you? PS we all know how thais' drive so wouldn't parking in the "correct spot" (towards the right) be sound advice?
falkan Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 - Victims of taxi drivers and ''mafia'' on Phuket needed to report incidents to police in person or little could be done to fix Phuket's problems, the Island's Deputy Police Commander, Colonel Sakchai Limjalern - give him a call! 1
andreandre Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 - Victims of taxi drivers and ''mafia'' on Phuket needed to report incidents to police in person or little could be done to fix Phuket's problems, the Island's Deputy Police Commander, Colonel Sakchai Limjalern - give him a call! Thats the guy that said this..; The Department of Special Investigation had established Crime Crisis Centres on Phuket but there had been difficulties in resolving some of Phuket's problems, the colonel said. ''The DSI came up with a list of mafia targets but in some cases, the list was wrong,'' he said. ''People on Phuket need to understand what's happening and why,'' he added. ''We did not have a conflict with the people from Bangkok but some parts of the operation have not been clear.''. The list was wrong..yes Some parts of the operation have not been clear..yes Any idea as to what he is trying to say?.

PS we all know how thais' drive so wouldn't parking in the "correct spot" (towards the right) be sound advice? Because the curb is red and I didn't want my bike locked. So you have no problem being told to move your bike to a red curb when it is legally parked by someone that has no authority to do so? And I didn't indicate to him that I was in the "right of way", I told him I would just be a minute. 1
LivinginKata Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Why don't you save your opinions about police volunteers for the thread about police volunteers. I agree. This topic is about 'parking'. But some of our members just twist any topic to suit their agenda. More posts have been removed. 2
grumpyoldman Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Joe, you did a great job helping out with the parking at the Fourth of July gig, some of these other guys that don't know you not sure where they are coming from. Anyway, on topic, around the corner from there and up the street I did the same as you, and the Tuk-Tuk guys told me I couldn't park in what was clearly open parking. I said ha natee as I only needed to run into this place give some info to the owner and out again. Well, five minutes later when I did come out, both tires flattened and tuk-tuks gone. Next time, will hide and film and post on youtube. 1
eezergood Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 The fact is, we/people, will be discussing this for the next 10 yrs!
Neeranam Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 The fact is, we/people, will be discussing this for the next 10 yrs! WE will if people like the OP listen and take orders from tuk tuk drivers
brucegoniners Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I would move. You really don't want a gang of those guys to get mad at you. "Legally" anything means nothing in this country, especially Phuket.
steelepulse Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 The fact is, we/people, will be discussing this for the next 10 yrs! WE will if people like the OP listen and take orders from tuk tuk drivers I take it you haven't been here when a gang of drivers sets upon someone than huh? Just two days ago I saw a group of Karon taxi thugs pushing and bullying a big Russian guy that didn't want to back down. After 5 or 6 hard pushes and an ever increasing gang of drivers surrounding him, he made the right decision and walked away. Go ahead Neeranam, come on down and make their day! 1
zaZa9 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 The TT guys around that spot are particularly bossy and vocal. Real bullies that make people dislike Thais. I always wonder why the owner of that big block of land there doesnt charge for parking. As it is I never go to Karon anymore as there is nowhere to park now the temple and surrounds seems out of bounds.
Garry Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Regardless of how legal you are parked, don't get into a turf war on a probably prime location with a taxi / Tuk Tuk driver. Easier to just move on 2

I Like Thai Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Did you consider for one moment why nobody else was parked there ? Could it be possible that it is a no parking zone ? Could it be that the Taxi driver was just telling him not to park in a no parking zone rather than he being a Mafia bully.

Yes because of the tuk tuk drivers Could it be possible that it is a no parking zone ? NO because it has yellow markings and not red ones Could it be that the Taxi driver was just telling him not to park in a no parking zone rather than he being a Mafia bully? NO !!! 1
cracker1 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Was the Beach Road area at Patong cleared of Tuk Tuk's and made available to the public, at the end of December as promised by the Phuket administration ?
Monkeyrobot Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Red is no parking, I noticed on you pic you were in a red zone the paint had just faded, Yellow /white is loading and red/white is no parking. No paint is parking unless there is a sign. 1
Popular Post simon43 Posted January 11, 2014 Popular Post Posted January 11, 2014 Might work if it was in Thai! International sign language works best..... Farang OK - Kwai not OK 6
