BANGKOK: -- Four people were killed and 238 others were injured as a result of violent incidents in Bangkok during anti-government protests between December 26 and January 18, according to the Department of Medical Services.

The Medical Services Department’s figures did not include the casualties caused by a grenade attack attack against protesters at the Victory Monument Sunday afternoon. At least 28 people, including a reporter of Post Today newspaper, were injured.

Pol Col Kamthorn Ouicharoen, superintendent of the Explosive Ordnanace Disposal Unit, said that the grenade used by the bomber was the Chinese-made or Russian-made RGD-5 type which was the same type used in the attack of protesters at Banthadthong on Friday.

The grenade, he said, has the capacity to kill within six-metre radius from the site of the explosion.

Ms Sitthinee Huangnark, a reporter of Post Today newsday, who was injured in the grenade attack, said that she was walking toward the back of the protest stage to file a report to the office when, out of a sudden, she heard the sound of an object hitting the floor about seven metres from where she stood.

She said she took a look and saw it was a hand grenade so she kneeled down before there was a loud explosion.

Ms Sitthinee sustained bomb shrapnels on his buttock and was rushed to Rajvithi hospital which is next to the protest site. Later on she was moved to Phyathai 2 hospital for recuperation.

Army Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha expressed his sorrow for the grenade attack and instructed the army to coordinate with the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order to step security for the protesters and to take proper steps to deal with the violent incidents, said Col Winthai Suvaree, deputy spokesman of the army.

Meanwhile, Lt Suneesa Lertpakawat, deputy spokeswoman of the government, said that the dead and injured protesters would be accorded the same compensation that red-shirt victims were given.

She suggested relatives or families of the victims to file complaints for compensation at their respective district offices.

Families of red-shirt victims who were killed were each given 7.75 million baht in compensation whereas the injured and the disabled were given proportionately less.

Somehow I get the feeling that they won't be given a single baht by this government.

never heard on a thai life being worth 7.5 million

even the dead policemans family only got about 2-3 million in compo from the billionaire family

7.75 mil for every red shirt and people would be throwing their family members under buses to get it

^^ if you believe the policemans family only got 3 million, then I bet you have names for all the fairies in the bottom of your garden also.

Do you think the family would want it to be made public how much they paid ?

Open the doors for all sorts of claims in the future for all the wealthy, its in their interests as a group to keep these amounts secret.

You may very well be correct, this government gave all victims the same compensation regardless of whose side they were

on although most were Red Shirts. The Democrats gave nothing. Unlikely that the interim government has the mandate to give

out compensation before the next election. Suthep has promised compensation before the demonstrations started for death and injury

so we shall see how quickly he reaches into his pockets.
