Grass seed

Yes, I know turf is readily available but we have quite a large area to cover and my husband thinks seed would be cheaper.

Does anyone know where to buy it? We tried the plant market yesterday but couldn't find any.

Likewise I went around the market after being told by several people that grass seed doesn't exist here.

And what did every stallholder tell me....."mai mee" the second most popular phrase here after sawadee krap

And the turf is pretty krap aswell.

My next trip back to uk is for grass seed and a proper poaching pan.

They have grass seed at the big place that sells turf just west across small street from Lotus Kamthieng. It is near the SW corner of the Tesco building . Off the main road - you pull in and park, there is a vintage wooden furniture/decor shop on the corner. You can see the grass from the main street behind Lotus. You can't get seed for Malay but you can get Bermuda and I think also Japanese.

Turf is so incredibly cheap here I don't know why you would bother with seed, involves a lot of preparation work, germination not always successful,daily watering, weeding.

Add in the fact that when they deliver they lay it quick smart you really have to weigh up the benefit of seeding...but up to you.

My experience with grass seed here is that it's almost impossible to grow, what with the heat and soil conditions. If you plant it in shady areas to avoid the sun, you won't be happy either. I brought some Scotts Turf Builder which is excellent seed for most purposes in the Midwest USA, but here it really amounted to nothing. Seeds germinated and took root as best they could, but after a month of struggling--even with tender loving care and watering--it, and I, gave up.

The broad leaf Malaysia grass sod is the most tolerant of sun and shade, dry and wet, good soil and clay. The finer-bladed Japanese grass will not tolerate shade at all, in my experience. Live and learn.

I went along to Kamtien market this morning, and found the small tins of Bermuda grass seed @ 680/tin, Ideally I need a larger amount to cover a larger area, does anywhere sell it in 20+ kg bags?

We planted our can last September and it got a good start with the rains. We didn't water it at all and it went dormant over the past few months of dry weather. Now with all the rain the last two weeks, it is nice and green again. The literature says Bermuda grass can survive drought conditions and I am a believer now! No vines above the ground so it is a good solution if you can afford it.

I have found that the indigenous grass that grew wild on my airstrip was nicer looking and easier to mow than the turf we installed around the house.

Can you post a photo of it Cloudhopper? We have some native grasses coming up but all of them end up having nasty vines or pods. Would be interested to see what variety is well behaved.

It's all brown and ugly at the moment. The wild grass at Doi Saket seems nice too, but I'm not a lawn fanatic. These might show it a bit -
