Disease control office confirms no report of H7N9 outbreak in Thailand

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 29 January 2014 (NNT) - The southern office of the Disease Prevention and Control Department confirmed that there have been no reports of outbreaks of the new fatal H7N9 virus from China in Thailand.

The office has nonetheless advised poultry farmers to notify the Livestock Development Department of any unusual illnesses in their farms.

The agency acknowledged although Thailand has been free from avian flu since 2006, the country remains at risk of being hit by avian flu, as it could spread from other Asian countries through cross-border trade and movements of poultry and people.

According to latest figures released by the Geneva-based World Health Organization (WHO) on January 23, a total of 219 patients have contracted the H7N9 virus, 52 of whom died.

A cull of 20,000 chickens was under way in Hong Kong Tuesday after the deadly H7N9 bird flu virus was found in poultry imported from mainland China, days before Lunar New Year.

Birds that suffer from avian flu usually show signs of depression, weakness, ruffled feathers, fever and diarrhea. Local livestock officials must be informed immediately when these symptoms are exhibited.

Members of the public are urged to avoid consuming sick poultry or come in contact with their carcasses.

Hong Kong culled over 20,000 chickens on Tuesday after the H7N9 bird flu virus was found in poultry imported from mainland China, ahead of the Lunar New Year.

PDRC struggle may take three to six months: Anek

BANGKOK: -- The struggle between the caretaker administration and the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) will last another three to six months, PDRC key member Anek Nakabut predicted Wednesday.

"A decisive moment will only come in three to six months," Anek, who played a part in the 1973 revolt, said.

Anek, speaking at a symposium on "learning from the great mass of people", organised by the Rung Arun School, blamed foreign powers for being behind the ills of Thai politics - not just the incumbent administration and fugitive former PM Thaksin Shinawatra. However, he did not elaborate what role these foreign powers play in Thai politics.

PDRC plans mass protest on Sunday

214646-imagejpeg-3283282-wpcf_728x413.jp

BANGKOK: -- The People’s Democratic Reform Committee will launch a three-day campaign starting Thursday to urge people to join a mass protest on the election day on Sunday.

PDRC spokesam Ekkanat Promphan said Wednesday that the mass protest was intended to put pressure on caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to stand down in order to pave the way for reform to take place before an election is staged.

He said that the protesters would not try to block the election on Sunday.

However, he warned that election process would not be smooth even if there is no disruption of the election because there are several unresolved problems such as no election is 28 constituencies because candidates could not register their candidacy and there is only candidate each in 22 constituencies and the likelihood that the result of election for party list candidates cannot be announced as vote counting in several constituencies will be rendered impossible.
