Bangkokians urged to reserve drinking water for consumption
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Feb 27 – The Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) has urged the public to reserve freshwater for household consumption in readiness for the decreasing supply of freshwater as a result of saline intrusion during the approaching dry season.

MWA Director for Corporate Communication Tassanee Rerksantiwong on Thursday warned the public to prepare for freshwater shortages as saltwater is expected to reach the MWA Sam Lae pumping station in Pathum Thani’s provincial seat during the March 3-4 and 9-10 high tides. She said the arrival of an excessive volume of salt water may threaten tap water production in many parts of Bangkok.

Despite water diversion from the Chao Phraya River to help maintain the quality of tap water production and to keep ecological balance, Bangkokians should prepare for possible water shortages as the dry season is expected to be prolonged for many months.

Ms Tassanee stressed that those who rely on WMA tap water--except residents of Phasi Charoen district on the Thonburi side as well as Taksin, Suksawat, Mahasawat and some parts of Bang Bua Thong districts, should store enough fresh water to see their households through the period of high salt content in the Bangkok water distribution system.

Meanwhile, the industrial sector has also been urged to prepare reserves of freshwater for production purposes or to contact MWA local offices if additional technical support is needed. Consumers, industrial or household, can also dial the MWA 1125 Hotline around the clock for more information.

The MWA also advises the public to conserve water use to deal with the approaching dry season. (MCOT online news)

EOD team inspects blast sites at CMPO HQ and ThaiPBS station

BANGKOK, 27 February 2014 (NNT) - Members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team are set to inspect the scenes of grenade attacks last night at the Thai PBS television station and the adjacent Royal Thai Police Sports Club.

Four M79 grenades were fired at the Royal Thai Police Sports Club and Thai PBS television station on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road after 7pm, but no injuries were reported. The blast damaged three cars in the Thai PBS parking lot.

The sports club compound also houses the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO).

The team will carry out a thorough inspection of the sites to determine where the grenades were fired from. The crime scenes have been sealed off from public entry and security has been tightened near the CMPO and the television station. Police officers from nearby stations will also be recruited to survey the sites.

Nan province declares two more Sub-districts drought disaster zones

NAN, 27 February 2014 (NNT) - Two Sub-districts in Nan province have been declared drought disaster zones. The damage to agricultural land, produce and rice fields is already widespread.

22 villages in Chalermprakiat Sub-district and 47 villages in Pua Sub-district are the latest areas affected by drought. The Nan governor promptly made the announcement, in order that drought-affected victims could receive aid and assistance immediately.

As for the Nalueng Sub-district, Administration Organization officials have been inspecting the main water resource areas after receiving complaints from at least 1,000 households in 7 villages, reporting water shortages due to the decreasing level of water in the Sub-districts’ main source of supply, the Nalueng creek. Several villages are unable to pump water for distribution to households resulting in a lack of water for consumption and other uses. Sandbags have been laid down to dam water in the creek for people to access instead.

Meanwhile over 3,000 rai of agricultural land where farmers turned to growing soy beans and corn instead of rice, are now starting to die, due to insufficient water.

The Nalueng village headman said this year’s drought came earlier than usual and is also more severe than before. Villagers are receiving water from the Sub-district's water trucks since most of their wells have dried up. The headman says virtually nothing can be grown in the vast 2,000 rai of farmland.
