CMPO to discuss plan to reopen shutdown offices Thursday

BANGKOK: -- The Center for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) is preparing to invite permanent secretaries from every ministry to find measures to counter the possibility of respective offices being blockaded by protesters of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC).

Tarit Pengdit, the director general of the Special Investigation Department, and a member of CMPO, said the CMPO will hold meeting Thursday with heads of all ministries in order to determine if security force in the form of police or military personnel will be required to protect state enterprises, government offices and civil service offices.

The meeting is a sign of the concerns of the possibility of violence breaking out in light of the recent spate of violence afflicting Bangkok.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at 2 pm tomorrow and is a result of the Civil Court’s ruling forbidding the CMPO to implement its nine orders it issued to deal with PDRC protesters.

Such ban has rippled the CMPO, rendering it incapable of carrying out its duties. Furthermore, the CMPO has uncovered information that a militant group prone to using violence has attached itself to the PDRC protesters and will be planning to commit acts of violence.

Mr Tarit commented that he was concerned with the hardship that the general public has had to undergo as a result of the shutting down of Bangkok by the PDRC. This was especially so with regards to government offices which have only just reopened. So far 53 departments have reopened but the Civil Court’s ruling has rendered the CMPO impotent and made it difficult for them to carry out their duties. As a result of the ruling, the PDRC has returned to lay siege on 11 government offices and private businesses.
