BANGKOK: -- The network of women’s right and family has called on the Office of Women’s Affairs and Family Development (OWAFD) to revise its earlier decision to name Mrs Yaowares Shinawatra as a recipient to this year’s award for outstanding performance in promoting equal rights of men and women, and women’s right protection.

A total of 35 women were nominated for their best performances in 16 categories to receive awards at this year’s award presentation to mark the International Women’s Day on March 8.

Names of the 35 nominees to the awards have been forwarded to Mr Vichien Chavalit, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security for final announcement and the presentation ceremony will be held on March 7 at Muang Thong Thanee Exhibition Center.

Among this year’s nominees are Mrs Poonsuk Musiklad, Mrs Kamnueng Chamnankit, Mrs Sombun Srikamdokae, Miss Ora-ua Kasetpuetpol, Mis Nitinart Rajaniyom.

Mrs Yaowares, president of the National Oustanding Thai Women Association, is also among the 35 nominees for outstanding performance awards in 16 categories.

Miss Supensri Puenkhoksung, a representative of the Women and Men Progressive Foundation who acted on behalf of the Network of Rights Women and Family, said women organizations have discussed the nomination of Mrs Yaowares by the OWAFD for outstanding performance on the promotion of equal rights for women and men, and the women’s right protection.

She said all women groups viewed that the nomination of Mrs Yaowares to the award was inappropriate as there are many other women who are more suitable and have outstanding performance in this area and are accepted in the societies than her.

They all agreed to send a letter to the director of the OWAFD Mr Somchai Charoenanuaysuk asking him to consider revising the decision within next week.

Mr Somchai said that Mrs Yaowares was proposed as nominee to the award by the committee organizing the 2014 International Women’s Day award ceremony and he has considered that she has outstanding performance.

He said that there was an objection to the nomination at the previous meeting but the committee which comprises more than 60 representatives from various occupation group has met and concluded that Mrs Yaowares did have the required performance and qualification and therefore has reached a resolution to name her as a recipient to the award

But he said if there was a request to revise the decision, it needed to have substantial reason and evidence to identify why she is not qualified.

He also asked that all reasons must be based on principle and not emotions or just because she is a member of the Shinawatra family which was unfair.

Mr Somchai said he was ready to propose the committee to revise the nomination and stressed that there was no politics involving in the nomination.

Come on people, stop blaming the woman.

She cares, so much, about Thailand, that she even had to go to Myanmar to ask the astrologer about the future of her country, and the future of her wrongly accused, husband.

Tears come to my eyes, about her concerns.

Give her the award and a kick out of this country to go and pester her husband.

Another nice example of self importance.

Women who are out standing need all the support they can get. It must be murder on the legs.

For the sake of accuracy, she's not Thaksin's former wife. That would be Khunying Potjanam. However, whatever her realationship, she doesn't seem to qualify for this type of prize.

Yaowares is the dear leader's sister. Go figure. I must have missed all of her glorious accomplishments in the news.

Now, now, don't be too harsh on her. When her driver fell ill and could no longer function as MP, she reluctantly left her safe home and agreed to stand as candidate. Now that showed courage, dedication. Mind you, her many tasks seemed to have kept her from campaigning in the district and meet the electorate which wanted some more say in who represented them as MP, but that's just the normal disturbance created by those who do not understand democracy.

why comment if you don't even know who this person is?

All I see in this thread is a bunch of knee jerk reactions.

I don't know what Yaowares does for women in Thailand but it's clear that neither do the posters on here. In fact the poster above seems to be under the impression that this it Potjaman.

Maybe you people should look at what she's done before you trash her.

If her sister can win the I-Poo Ying Ngoh award, it would be only fair for Yaowares to get an award too. Otherwise there might be a cat fight at home. Yaowapha had better get one too. Perhaps a plastic surgery clinic will sponsor something for her.
