Jingthing Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 It's great to see this topic covered in the western press. Of course Thailand's "liberalness" towards sexual minorities is wildly overrated. Most gay expats understand that. But casual tourists, etc. probably usually don't. taiwanatoa Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 If you play the game their way,(i.e. play the role, act like a sick queen) you are tolerated. 1
Jingthing Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 If you play the game their way,(i.e. play the role, act like a sick queen) you are tolerated. Perhaps that's a crude way of putting it, but you've got a point.
Popular Post onthemoon Posted March 15, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 15, 2014 Thailand may not be perfect, but it is still much better to be gay here than in some Western countries. 3

In the most tolerant society you can find anecdotes of intolerance. This doesn't prove anything. I would say intolerance is more the norm in the West than it is in Thailand. 1

Jingthing Posted March 16, 2014 Author Posted March 16, 2014 Problems as in homophobic violence and intolerance is a real problem for gay people. Yes, Virginia ... in THAILAND. As far as suggesting these are only mere anecdotes of intolerance referred to in the article, reading the article would easily refute that brushoff: Systemic discrimination is evident. A collaborative UNESCO, Plan International and Mahidol University study from November found that a third of 2,000 surveyed LGBT students had been physically harassed, a fourth sexually. Only a minority had previously told anyone about the bullying, even though it had caused many of them to be depressed and 7% to attempt suicide. http://time.com/12603/thailands-intolerance-of-its-own-lgbt-community-will-surprise-you/
