I plan to buy a scooter in Hua Hin when I get there in May but after three months I need to return to Australia and leave the scooter at my wife's home in Bangkok. for two-three months. Any information or suggestion please.

A Thai friend of mine surprised me when she announced that she had "posted" her BMW bike from furthest Issan to Bangkok by "parcel post". I did not ask details but she told me they make up a lorry load so it takes a couple of weeks but the cost is very reasonable -- something like 500Baht.

I am surprised too! I am puzzled on how to pack a scooter - a create or wrapping paper allover? I do not wish any damage happens to it? I believe there is insurance option. Question is how to pack "scooter parcel"?

Go to your local post Office and ask. They will advise you how to do it.

I'll ask my friend, but the implication was that there was no packaging involved. pm me next week to remind me to ask ;)

There is nothing to it. You just drive it to the post office and they do everything. You will need the green book. I've posted my bike all over Thailand and it never takes more than 2-4 days. Probably about 700 baht from Hua Hin to Bangkok. If there is enough gas in the tank to make it worthwhile for them to go to the trouble then they might drain the tank leaving just enough in to get to a station when you pick it up. Sometimes they don't drain it. There is no charge for prepping the bike.

Shame on you!

The tanks are not drained at all.

The petrol evaporates, or leaks out.

Solution?

Offer the bike for transport with a nearly empty tank.

That said, I never had a drained tank with the mail or the rail.

Thank you all. Yes it is very simple! Post Office wouldn't pack anything for you in Australia.I will use post office.

Out of curiosity, why don't you just drive it to Bangkok? I have made the journey on my Neuvo between Bangkok and Hua Hin a few times. It's an easy ride.

Back in 1997, I worked in Petchaburi and used to ride my old Honda scooter to Hua Hin. For some reason they had finished building the highway, mostly, but it was still closed to traffic for a few months and I had the whole road to myself almost all the way to Hua Hin. What a pleasure. I can't imagine it being anything but a pain in the ass to do today to Bangkok. What route do you take?

So how come it don't evaporate or leak out before and after the post office get involved. Ask them they drain for safety reasons. Maybe worth taking some gas in a bottle when you go to collect. I had it drained dry and would not start. Usually they have some in collection area but not always. Used few times depending size, Pattaya-Udon 3000 baht, Udon - Phuket. Copy Green book and passport. Pattaya if they see a helmet will not allow it to go under the seat and insist its sent separately for 300 baht. No receipt given for that.

That could be an option but I am not confident, and I am inexperienced to ride a bike on highway.

someone said it costs about 700 THB but you are saying 3000 THB. Of course it changes by the distant but 3000 THB seems to be excessive.

Why not ask the dealer you are purchasing the new bike from. They have trucks dropping off new bikes all the time. They have friends that travel daily to Bangkok for a price of course, they may even take you as well.

That's good idea but is a bit risky. If someone on the way wants to change parts with an old one. I can's go along because I will have my family.Nevertheless it may be an option to reconsider.

Hey

1) post office is fine

2) train is the same but you have to go there

3) ride is not that long but quite tiring and not that fun.... Cars' drivers do not really pay attention to you and remember you are driving on the left side of the road......pigeon holes. You cannot use expressways.

4) in order to be able to use your bike upon return you might ask someone to start the engine on a regular basis - maybe one a week or more depending on its age. Don't forget either that the tyres will need to be inflated ( but you will notice it)
