BANGKOK: -- Officials have denied claims that the authorities have "rigged" lottery numbers to resemble vehicle license plates of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

The officials also insisted that Thailand's lottery drawing process is strictly transparent.

The speculation that Ms. Yingluck has somehow influenced the supposedly-randomised mechanism of lottery arose after the lottery draw on 16 March, which turns up the number 531404 as the first prize winner.

In accordance with the unofficial rule of underground lottery business across the kingdom, the number 404 is also recognised as winning number in the three digits category; the official winners of the category are 250, 305, 400, and 904.

The result sent a wave of euphoria throughout supporters of Ms. Yingluck, since the number 404 coincide with the license plate of the official vehicle boarded by Ms. Yingluck during her recent trip to Chiang Mai province - 5404 - and many of her supporters have played that number in the underground lotto market out of hope that it might bring them some fortune.

It did. A loud cheer was heard in the community around the famous Three Baht Noodle shop on Chiang Mai's Sanambin Kao Road after the result was broadcast.

According to an underground lotto dealer in the vicinity, who asked not to be named, many residents have wagered on the number 404 after Ms. Yingluck arrived at the Three Baht Noodle Shop on Saturday on the vehicle.

As she stepped off the car, Ms. Yingluck accidentally slipped and fell down on the pavement. To the many reporters at the scene, it was a golden opportunity for photos. To the locals, however, it was interpreted as a lucky sign that the number of the license plate might turn up in the lotto draw, the deal explained.

It is understood that a number of officials and reporters who accompanied Ms. Yingluck on that day similarly won some fortune by wagering with the number 404.

Another underground lottery dealer in Sakon Nakhon province told our correspondent that many residents in northeastern Thailand - the political stronghold of Ms. Yingluck - may have won a total of "hundreds of millions of baht" since they decided to bet on 404 as a show of support for Ms. Yingluck.

In the country where obsession over lottery runs as deep as superstition concerning all things abnormal, Ms. Yingluck is revered by some veteran lotto buyers as "the Lucky Lady", due to previous winning lotto numbers which have been associated to her vehicles or activities.

While the more rational citizens dismiss the phenomenon as a typical case of confirmation bias, some anti-government critics voiced their concerns on the social network that the state lotto machinery might have been rigged in order to add a halo of mysticism around Ms. Yingluck via the winning lotto numbers.

Such speculation forced Pol.Maj.Gen. Attakrit Tharichatra, director of the Government Lottery Office, to state that the lotto result was merely a coincidence amplified by imagination.

The result could very well resemble age of famous people, or license plates of other politicians, Pol.Maj.Gen. Attakrit said, adding "It depends on interpretation".

The circumstances of the lotto draw, which was broadcast live on TV and had involved the use of clear plastic devices, also meant any rigging of lotto result is impossible, Pol.Maj.Gen. Attakrit insisted.

"There is no number locking as the accusation claims," the director said, "The process is very transparent. Every step of the procedures can be scrutinised".

Pol.Lt.Gen. Rapeepat Palawong, who was appointed to oversee the lotto draw of 16 March round, similarly denied any foul play. He added that he was not even aware of Ms. Yingluck's vehicle license plate until the media reported about it.

Is there nothing in this country that one fool or another won't try and blame on the Shinawatras?

why are they fools, because you say so ..coffee1.gif

Well of course they are not going to come out and say "Yes, we rigged it..."

This is a non-article, pointless waste of 0's and 1's

It is understood by whom exactly?

May have won. Ah yes, information from an underground lottery dealer. Always reliable.
Just waiting for the Army General Prayuth to weigh in on this matter. rolleyes.gif
I would think tripping would be viewed as a sign of bad luck?

The matter is clear then. They had a senior red shirt police officer to oversee the draw to prevent foul play.

I believe that they are fools because of the overall level of ridiculousness of the claims.

The campaign to demonise the Shinawatra family definitely entered bizzarro land a long time ago.

Too many fools seem to believe that Thailand was in some sort of mythical utopia or garden of eden state and then it all turned to crap when Thaksin popped his head up.

If you ask me - Fools one and all.

I particularly like the unintended slam of Yingluck Enthusiasts by the pro-Shinawatra rag Khaosod let the line slip out that it thinks they are irrational.

"While the more rational citizens dismiss the phenomenon"

The drawing of the lotto is totally transparent , this possibly is so and the lottery commission should be congratulated, however this would be one of the very few Transparent organisations that operate in Thailand. coffee1.gif

It's the ying yang balance of harmony for the morons in this country that attribute good fortune to the Shinawatras.

Why does the Lottery Office have a Pol. Maj-Gen. as director and why was there a need for a Pol. Lieut-Gen to be present to oversee the 16th drawing? Just to keep them busy after their retirement?

With that having been said - how can a country that does not allow gambling manage to have a recognised "underground Lottery"?

These high ranking police officers have attained ranks and responsibilities that "poor" Police Captain Chalerm Yubamrung can only dream about.

I am a bit confused:

-- Officials have denied claims that the authorities have "rigged" lottery numbers to resemble vehicle license plates of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Lots of denials going on here but, there is only a very obscure mention who made the accusation? ...some anti-government

critics voiced their concerns on the social network that the state lotto machinery might have been rigged...

That doesn't even warrant the effort of making a denial or a story

Ahh, Thailand. You could write the same stories at any time over the last 50 years, just change the names and nobody would notice the slightest difference. Lottery rigging, ridiculous numerical superstition, corrupt political dynasties elected by the rural majority emasculated by the military - court - judiciary - civil service nexus.

Plus ca change.

It's hard to tell if you agree with the statement or disagree? If the Shin's walk like a duck, quack like a duck......etc! Thailand would be best rid of them!! thumbsup.gif

There is no way it could had been rigged...maybe mysterious but not rigged. What do you think the chances were that the day Obama won the presidency Obama's home town of Chicago the lottery numbers were 666! And what about the year to the day of 9/11 the NY lottery pick 3 was 911! Strange things happen sometimes.

Oh...and by the way, I personally have a friend that won the big jackpot there in Thailand. My dad had lived there for many years and he thought it was rigged because he had never heard of anyone really winning the big prize. My friend works for Thai Air and I have known him for maybe 20 years.

I suspect some urban myths may have just made it to the list of 'established facts'
