Egypt court sentences 529 Morsi supporters to death

(BBC) A court in Egypt has sentenced to death 529 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

They were convicted of charges including murdering a policeman and attacking police.

The group, members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, are part of a larger trial involving more than 1,200 Morsi supporters.

Egyptian authorities have cracked down harshly on Islamists since Mr Morsi was removed in July.

Thousands have been arrested and hundreds killed.

I used to like going to Egypt! I wonder how they will execute 500+ prisoners? 20 a day maybe, then watch the remaining ones gather together to do anything to save their own lives. This could WILL get very ugly. Makes the Thai version of democracy seem quite utopic.

People making all kinds of judgements and comments on things they know next to nothing about. These countries existed way longer than many of the self righteous western countries who preach human rights to murderers. Give it up. U sit on the outside and pass judgement from the almighty western chair. Ridiculous

In most country, convicted murders are hang.

Nothing wrong with that.

In most countries convicted murderers do not hang. The majority of nations do not have capital punishment.

But a lot of people in countries where the death penalty isn't used think that it should be.

wasn't Morsi the democratically elected leader of Egypt?

I am not sure what your point is. Morsi was elected, but this is about some of his supporters who have been given the death penalty.

It doesn't have much to do with democracy or elections. It has to do with court proceedings.

There is something wrong with that, in particular when the soldiers shooting unarmed protesters in the back are not tried and when a policeman that killed 37 protesters by firing teargas into an overcrowded prison van gets 10 years (whilst two of his colleagues got suspended sentences).

I also do not see how 500+ people can all have taken part in killing one (1) person....

Of course has nothing to do with being democratically or popularly elected silly. Just talk with the PDRC and Constitutional Court.

You live by the sword, you die by the sword! If they murdered some one what should happen to them?

I find it hard to believe all 529 people murdered one policeman. It sounds like those who believe they are in charge went into the area, rounded up everyone who was within the vicinity and have decided to exterminate them.

A good 10-20 years of civil war will decimate Egypt back to the level it deserves to be at : a barren wasteland in the desert.

Killing over 500 hotheads is like lashing a hornets nest with a whip. Yes, you'll kill some hornets, but what ensues will be far worse.

5,000 years ago, when the Egyptians were using tens of thousands of slaves to build their massive death houses, Maidu Indians in western N.America were leaching adorns and drying fish, and concurrently, Tahitians were frolicking in the surf. Just because a group of people were building large sandstone buildings does not mean they were/are superior to others.
