Seafood lovers warned to stay away from shellfish during summer

BANGKOK, 25 March 2014 (NNT) - Health professionals are warning seafood lovers to avoid shellfish during the summer months as shellfish poisonings spurred on by hot weather are increasingly common.

The Health Department said that shellfish such as mussels, clams, and oysters feed on food particles and other matter in the water. During the hot season, these toxins which include dinoflagellates and other bacteria are easily accumulated.

Lead, zinc, and cadmium are also found in crabs and squids during February to April.

The department further warned that ordinary cooking methods do not eliminate the toxins and some shellfish can store these toxins for several weeks after the first exposure. Once ingested, symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath and dry mouth.

In addition, a bacterial strain called Vibrio Parahaemolyticus is often found in oysters, fish, and prawns harvested in warm waters. When ingested, it can cause a gastrointestinal illness and lead to infection.
