I've just got a 1 yr non immigrant O visa, being married to a thai. I've had this before, and have always left every 3 months for the usual passport stamp. I've been told I can actually go to phuket town and get a stamp there, every 3 months, rather than leaving the country. Any truth in this?

Depends on whether you have a visa extension or a visa. A visa you obtain outside of Thailand, and obliges you to leave the country every 3 months, a visa extension you obtain from an immigration office inside Thailand and obliges you to report every 90 days.

Correct, must be an extension stamp to save leaving across an international border every 90 days, and only make a 90 day report at immigration. If only a multi entry non immigrant O then you need to leave Thailand every 90 days.
