Following years of infections etc, I had both big toe nails removed at age 16.

When they grew again, the problem came back, but also dug in along the front of the nail.

The problem was only along the sides before.

After years of constant trouble, infections etc.

I solved the problem.

With a piece of semi flexible plastic, I cut a slither.

With a pair of tiny long nose pliers I unbent the turned nail and slipped the plastic under the nail.

This spread the load and I glued the plastic in place. Good old araldite!

The nail eventually grew long and much less turned in along the side.

I occasionally used the pliers to gently undo the curve inwards.

It hurt like hell to get the plastic under the nail.

It took ages, like months for the nail to grow longer.

But the job has been running successfully for more than 50 years now.

As I get older the nails become thicker - a normal thing I think.

I am careful not to cut the nails too short or too rounded.

Good luck

Edit

I used hydrogen peroxide to regularly clean and disinfect the nails - still do.

I tried it before surgery to try to prevent the need for surgery and so far it is working out. Never heard of this therapy being done after nail removal which I still think is usually intended to be permanent removal.

My toenail was removed a while ago but it is growing back again slowly. It looks as though it wants to turn ingrowing again but it is not that far along yet and I want to prevent it if I can.

I had one, IN BKK went to government hopsital Camilian (dont really like it) anyway doc said let me do it. within 30 mins he popped me on a table made painful injection into my toe and removed nail. First day I was in agony could barely walk, but other days improved my condition.

I went to the local government hospital at the amphur and promised the doctor that if it hurt I would scream very loudly. He gave me 3 infections and it was over in 10 minutes with no screams. The cost was about 500 baht. The doctor speaks good English and also has a sense of humour.

Did he apply chemicals to prevent regrowth?

Nothing to prevent regrowth sad to say.

Way back then when I was hijacked into the army medics and given the auspicious title of theatre assistant one of the OP"s I witnessed was for an ingrowing toenail and was called a Z incision, don't remember more than that as it was a lifetime ago.

No help at all am I.

Normally you get the portion of the nail that's causing the pain or infection removed not the whole nail bed as once the matrix has been damaged the nail being torn off it is often grown back deformed.

That's exactly what happened to me. I had ingrown toenails on both big toes. On one of them only the offending part of the nail was removed, and it grew back normally. On the other one, the entire nail was removed, and it grew back deformed, with a kind of bunched up ridge in the middle.
