BANGKOK: -- A drag strip in Pathum Thani turned into a bloodbath early yesterday with seven people shot. Among the victims was Chatrawat Rattanawong, the 31-year-old son of a former deputy governor of the province.

Police received a report that a gunfight broke out at Bangkok Drag Avenue about 30 minutes past midnight.

"The place was hosting its seventh midnight speed party when the shooting happened," said Chatchai Phrakruthin, 26, one of the victims.

Chatchai said he was walking around the starting line on the track when he heard several gunshots and then felt a pain in his back.

Chatchai said some witnesses told him that a man known as Ken was the gunman.

Police have checked recordings from security cameras and are going after the attackers.

"It's about rivalry between two racing gangs," a police source said.

At least five firearms were used, he said. The two gangs have been at each other since they met at a competition in Chon Buri, he added.

This country is getting seriously out of control, the police need to start actually doing proactive police work rather than reactive.

These youths have far too easy access to guns and carry them with impunity, after an incident like this the dragstrip should be closed down and those involved get a lifetime ban when or if it ever opens again, these youths must be taught that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable

Oh, they are reacting now?

So who do you propose is going to teach them? The politicians? The teachers? The celebrities? The police? The monks? The military? Or are they just emulating their role models?

I agree 100%. Just who do these kids think they are? Bringing guns to what should have been a simple knife-fight facepalm.gif

Those involved in this were not youths, why do you say that?

Bangkok Drag Avenue is a privately owned and well-run venue for serious drag racing and was not involved in the incident, why should it be closed?

one has to ask what they use as drag strips, are these special racing strips built to purpose or are they simply streets that these idiots have taken over. Also have to wonder at the cars, are these cars being driven on the roads as normal cars or are they again simply built for racing. Seems like the police have a lot to answer for here, why arent they controlling this situation and how in the hell can they let them run in the first place but then I suppose the extra cash they get for letting them do it suffices. Would also bet that most of these "drivers"(and I use that term very loosely) are from well to do families to afford the cars in the first place, maybe its time for the police to start doing what they are paid for instead of just collecting cash bonuses for ignoring it.

Well, a lot of negative assumptions. I would say pretty much you have tried to insult every person with a race car in Thailand and that includes me. Get of your f8king high horse dipswitch! The Pathum Thai drag strip is a dedicated race track for drag racing. A lot of lower and middle class enjoy racing as do the same group world wide. Go take a look before spouting this viral type of post. It is very undortunate to encounter what happened the other night, but this can and does happen anywhere and any country. It will be managed seriously by the organizers.

Don't be ridiculous! This is not normal behaviour around the world! At least not in the many parts of the world that I have lived.

Maybe it is time for you to stop jumping to un-informed conclusions. BDA is a purpose-built, privately owned drag strip of international standards, the racing is certainly not done on the streets so there is no police corruption involved neither do they have anything to answer for. So your statement, "maybe its time for the police to start doing what they are paid for instead of just collecting cash bonuses for ignoring it." is, once again, an unjustified dig at the police.

Some cars are street cars, some are pure drag cars that would be impossible to drive on public roads that are trailered to the strip and they run in different classes. There is a mix of racers from the ordinary bloke running his inexpensive standard car to the more affluent competing in a faster more specialist class, many with sponsorship from well-known companies to tuning companies running their own vehicles

If you use your cloghead you'll see that there were no "kids" involved.

Threw, not through

The drag strip through me right off , I thought I would be looking at Lady boy gun fight , just another bizarre episode for the Thai government to acknowledge that not only is the PTP rotten, some parts of the population are taking a leaf out of their book.
