I was just trawling a similar topic but another forum and it appeared that in order to get the affirmation to marry it seemed a trip to the British embassy (for Brits of course) in bkk was necessary.

It occurred to me because the OP was an island dweller bkk was the most appropriate anyway.

Can we as chiang mai dwellers use the local embassies/consulates or is it a trip to Bkk for everyone.?

No trip to bkk, no overnight stay.....ok will have another beer.

......a night or two away, I would have had 3 more beers!

Without getting into all the nitty-gritty, it really is not difficult to get married and register that marriage in Thailand. Basically, you select the amphur you prefer and go through the registration process there. Some paper, but not an arduous experience. Muang Chiang Mai can be busy. You can select a neighboring amphur. Makes no difference. Just remember, if you want a divorce, that process is followed at the same amphur.

Now, a little more nitty-gritty. Basically, you need the appropriate usual forms of identification (passports, visas and IDs, residence papers). BOTH parties must also swear eligibility to marry. If divorced, you need documentation for that. For that, you do not have to go to Bangkok. You might have it in hand. If not, you have to get a copy where the divorce was filed. That all has to pass through the (MOFA) foreign office here at the Government Center, if it did not occur in Thailand. If Thailand, you have to get the documentation to the amphur where the divorce was registered. So, relevant to Chiang Mai, the process takes some time but is relatively simple if you have the appropriate documents. I also believe that you might need a trip to your consulate for notarization of some documents if they are from abroad. Probably can be done by mail, if not here. Check it out.

The above is not meant to be a precise point-to-point guide. Otherwise, I am certain someone has done this on ThaiVisa. Better, visit your friendly amphur marriage-divorce clerk. She'll explain it. Or get a lawyer. Or read Thai Law for Foreigners. Of course, you can Google it with the same hazards as getting advice here!

Simple answer is you can get the affirmation to marry at the British Consulate in Chiang Mai, I think the cost is 3,900 Baht. Have done it myself a month ago.

Thanks guys,

Paulchiangmai; is the 3900bt fee for the consulates actually researching at the records office to get a copy of divorce OR was the fee for you just showing up with your divorce decree in hand.?

Sorry for the delay eyecatcher but I have been away for a few days. The fee was for the latter. In actual fact I have been married and divorced a number of times [bit of a cad] but to make matters less complicated I only show for the latest.

3900 to show up with everything prepared for them.

I didn't spend that much on the original village wedding.

Rip off Britain is everywhere it seems.

I must have a screw loose aswell, I am on number 3.
