icare999
i'm not surprised quite a number of "hardcore" TVF members support this fascist coup, a coup btw widely condemned by academics/intellectuals and real Thailand specialists (not some chronic drunks from pats). the atmosphere on this forum is often right-wing and of course utterly simple-minded. edit: typo corrected who cares what you think and get over it I'm happy that at last Taksin and his vile lot might be out for good Who cares what academics think they are a bunch of tossers anyway. Ive spent my working life working with so called experts and rest and was considered an expert myself in my field but I was full of shit as are all of them. I just collected the money and laughed. I worked for UN world bank and many others and all without exception including me were a load of freeloading tosspots only difference is some of us knew it and just liked the system.
ericsommer
I tried to input this previously. Where are the middle class expats who endlessly slandered the government elected by Thai workers and farmers and who prayed for its removal by a demonstration, by the courts, or by a coup. Where are you now that it's happened.

thailiketoo
Julius Caesar did the same. Of course, that was 2.000 years ago. And he's still remembered today as a great state's man so what's your point? Why do all you people think Caesar dissolved the Senate? Is it some flaw in classical education you all share?

Chris Lawrence
What he's doing can possibly work for the short term. But after a few weeks, people will be waving their special interest flags. He's put himself in a Solomonic position, where he makes final decisions on all important issues. There are deep pitfalls in doing that. Even when Thailand has a semi-functioning government, there is hassling overevery bit of legislation. I hope the general keeps a cool heart (jai yen), because there will be big challenges in the upcoming weeks and months. It's hard to herd cats. Well it least he is beginning to look at paying the farmers. The reason the farmers haven't gotten paid, is because (from what we've been told) there isn't the money to pay them. The program was fatally flawed from the outset. Where is the general going to find the billions of baht to pay them? I tell you where he won't get the money: from cutting back on military salaries, ha ha. And you can bet he won't be cutting back military expenditures. (Reuters) - Thailand's military junta and the finance ministry will meet on Monday to discuss how to pay rice farmers over $2.5 billion owed under a failed subsidy scheme run by the government the military overthrew on Thursday. The Finance Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong would meet senior officials from the ministry and from state banks to set out policy. Prajin has taken charge of economic affairs under the military government. Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, who heads the government, addressed hundreds of civil servants at an army facility on Friday, a day after the army seized power, and told them that paying the farmers was "an urgent issue", according to a source with knowledge of the meeting who requested anonymity' Also Strait Times reported same. He also needs the farmers support. Do you only read the Nation?
phutoie2
PDRC, TV anti-Thaksinistas, Suthepistas and Yellows wanted reforms, out with YS, block elections and abolish the government, senators, the house et al. You clamored, ranted and wished it:. There you have it and then some. Are you guys happy now? not as happy as I would be if the army summarily executed any politicians guilty of corruption. I would deem guilty being any that accumulated great wealth whilst serving Marcusd. Via tapatalk Great idea, why not have them on lottery days too. Saan
It seems like Thailand is following in the footsteps of that great bastion of democracy - Fiji. It was 2006 when their last coup took place and they are only now planning elections, 8 years later. Could this be Thailand's fate?
djjamie
Before the coup I worried about red shirts (sorry 3rd hands) throwing grenades at me because they only support 1 principle of democracy. After the coup I can relax that security has been restored for a few days……... Then I will worry about red shirts (sorry 3rd hands) throwing grenades at me because the General is trying to return 15 principles of democracy to Thailand. Gunna
BREAKING: General Prayuth replaces police chief, DSI chief, and defence permanent secretary, dissolves the Senate and takes over parliamentary authority. Goodbye Tarit and good ridence to another of Thaksin's lap dogs This General has done more good for Thailand than I thought possible and even grabbed one of Thaksin's sons as he was trying to flee Keep up the great work

hugocnx
I have a feeling that there is much more to this coup, and today's consolidation of power, than we are being told. @LuukKoeyKorate: yes I had a Thai trying to explain it to me today, behind closed doors (no, not a dark room ), the rumors that Thais whisper in private. It was getting so outrageous, I had to stop him half way. Needless to say, I cannot repeat it (and I also don't believe it), but let's just say it has been many years leading up to this, and YL and Suthep are not the only ones taking orders. The 'story' got outrageous at one point (which I won't repeat, it would be the biggest scandal this world has ever seen), but even more outrageous when the missing MH 370 was brought into play This person did have one thing right: a foreigner can never really understand what is truly behind what has been happening the last 6 months. What we see are just excuses given to hide the real power struggle. What's amazing is, most Thais know it but will not speak of it. Having nightmare's all the time? brewsterbudgen
Hmmm. Not many on here defending the coup now are there? Yep. Defending it 100%. As are my Thai hill country family. As is the guy in the local shop. As is the woman who sells the coffee. As is the policeman I occasionally cycle with. As is a schoolboy, so of poor farmers. As is .... many people And many Thai people also supported the government. Hmmm. Not many on here defending the coup now are there? If the army is a so called dictator, I'd rather have this soft dictator instead of the stealing mob that was called government. It doesn't really matter what you want. The Thai people should be allowed to choose whoever they want.
Tony125
Hmmm. Not many on here defending the coup now are there? I don't understand why the general has taken over the senate but I trust he is doing what has to be done for the good of the country and the people. Dictatorship is not usually good for ANY country or its people. Now that the senate has been disbanded the General is the sole authority on rules and laws governing the country. No fair or non biased judgement just totalitarian control over everyone no politicians elected by or chose by people, no democracy just a police state.

Popular Post outre99
He's cutting out the cancer piece by piece. He is consolidating power, simple as that. Long time before you will see any elections here now! Right, because elections worked out so well for Thailand. There's too much talk about one aspect of democracy - elections, and not enough about all the other aspects that make democracy functional: government transparency and accountability, free and fair campaigning all over the country and not just where it's safe, informed and involved citizenry, independent judiciary, an adversory and impartial press. The last 15 years have clearly demonstrated that without all or most of these other institutions in place Thai "democracy" is just mob rule. The problems are so ingrained now that the only way to fix it is to break it down and start over. Hopefully we're witnessing just that.
Now or Never
The arrest of Thaksin's son maybe the most import event of the coup. exalll
what is worse is this is Asia's second biggest economy. During the PTP years the car makers, the largest swag of the economy decided to,leave Thailand. No one can afford that loss. So Thailand will become a true failed state shortly thereafter Marcusd.
