larsjohnsson
There is real opposition on the streets, personally witnessed. Despite their armoured cars and tanks and guns, they may not be able to take away our sons this time. Could this be one coup too many. I pray for peace with justice. Personally witnessed? Really? Not just a single lunatic fringe red shirt, like you, going ape sh!t There was many protesters close to where I live today. Popular Post WhizBang
This is not surprising given the insanity of the last few years. Especially after all the talk of dividing Thailand and Civil War. I can still remember how good it was in Thailand before Thaksin. The General really needs to rid Thailand of any thing related to Thaksin and the UDD. Sure, it was a real paradise in Thailand before Thaksin and the "30 baht health scheme." I remember asking a doctor what the Thais did without medical insurance. His reply ... "They die." You do realize that it was the democrates that pushed that legislation through. Right? It was Thaksin that took credit when it kicked in under his watch, even though he had nothing to do with it.
jimbeam1
starting to get interesting trying to work out what exactly the general is up to. I was quite happy with what he was doing till this, have to admit I am baffled by this move though but I hope he does have a good reason for it. We can only hope that he is being very even handed and going to try to get a neutral group in control, he has virtually warned the police etc that he will not take any sh*t from them and to do their jobs properly without any thaksin/ptp/red interference. I think tarit may well and truly be on the outer and should be sh*tting his pants as should the beloved ex police boss, both will hate their sucking up to thaksin I think in the near future. Just hope he continues to do what the country needs, lets wait and see. What he is doing could be the best thing to happen to Thailand, could equally be the worst (OK half full/empty) probably a lot more noses being put out of joint before we begin to see the full picture. All we can do is wait and see what evolves over the next few days/weeks. Or just keep on speculating. It does make some entertaining reading. jb1
Popular Post Hanskarl
So many of you cannot accept whats going on here in Thailand. If you feel it's so bad, why not move back to you home country or to Zimbabwe as someone proposed. I'm a farrang work and live in this Kingdom and I do accept if strong measures are taken to root out corruption and any other issues. We are guests in this country and not citizens. If some cannot accept that fact, they always have the freedom to leave Thailand and settle down in another "paradise".

folium
This is the first coup ever in Thailand where the coup maker hasnt met with HM on live TV to ask for approval. No joke, its true. Was in The Nation and Bangkok Post today. There was certainly no stamp of approval in 1932 which has been the most dramatic coup in Thai history, the other 11 plus 9 failed efforts just rearranged deck chairs and who was sitting in which one. This could well shape up to be as significant as 1932 in terms of fundamentally changing the status quo. Time will tell.... So you call 1976 and 1992 a deck chair rearrangement. They were certainly messy with events at Thamassat and Black May taking many lives, but what happened to those responsible? Was the leader of the 1992 coup not compensated with control of True telecoms?Neither event had as great an impact as 1932 and possibly what we are witnessing now if certain possibilities turn out to be correct. Popular Post arminbkk
I have a feeling that there is much more to this coup, and today's consolidation of power, than we are being told. @LuukKoeyKorate: yes I had a Thai trying to explain it to me today, behind closed doors (no, not a dark room ), the rumors that Thais whisper in private. It was getting so outrageous, I had to stop him half way. Needless to say, I cannot repeat it (and I also don't believe it), but let's just say it has been many years leading up to this, and YL and Suthep are not the only ones taking orders. The 'story' got outrageous at one point (which I won't repeat, it would be the biggest scandal this world has ever seen), but even more outrageous when the missing MH 370 was brought into play This person did have one thing right: a foreigner can never really understand what is truly behind what has been happening the last 6 months. What we see are just excuses given to hide the real power struggle. What's amazing is, most Thais know it but will not speak of it.

Popular Post northernjohn
Wow, the guy is really showing his colors, ain't he? A dictator of his ilk won't stand much longer for a free flow of information on the internet. I'm afraid our days are numbered. They didn't cut it last time. Too much stuff depends on it these days, I suppose. Yes to much is resting on them this time. Under the previous government the rice farmers were going to have to wait for ever to get their money. Now they will have their money in 20days. The government was unable to get it for them. Also they showed no willingness to negotiate a settlement to the dispute that was showing the size of the rift in the population. The PTP had no idea of how many of the common workers were against their corruption and time wasting efforts to white wash one man living in self imposed exile in Dubai. They opened the gates for a kitty cat and got a whole pride of full grown lion's. Even then they were to stupid to see they had to do some thing. There are things you can dither over for ever as they are not that important but this one was. The Government refused to do any thing about it saying it was illegal to borrow the money. Now it is not. With the power he has taken on you can bet any changes to the constitution will be for the benefit of Thailand not a Politician. I personally don't care if it is not Democratic. It is for the good of Thailand and that is the most important thing a government of any kind can do. Of course there are going to be protestors their source of free money just got shut down.
