Just a basic coffee drip cone . . . where?

It is one of the simplest kitchen gadgets there is, and given that there is a vibrant coffee culture here in Chiang Mai, I am shocked I have had trouble finding a basic, simple coffee filter cone, but alas, I am having that trouble. I'm over near Canal and CMU, so I have looked at Rimping in Maya and Airport, Tops @ KSK, Yok, BonCafe on Changklan, and various Starbucks, with no luck. Can anyone tell me where I can find one that they have seen, without guessing where it might be? Thanks . . .

We went through the same problem last year. Finally located one at 'Daiso' 100 Yen shop in Central Festival Mall. There are two other Daiso shops that I know of; one next to Rimping Supermarket near Airport Plaza, and one on the 3rd floor of Airport Plaza.

IMO a waste of paper, time (which cools the brew) and money. i use a fine mesh tea strainer and pour the entire brew through the screen. sure a few dregs on the cup bottom but excellent coffee fast. all my used grounds go straight into the toilet bowl and no paper waste. tea screen easy to carry on journey and non-breakable. sometimes at home use a 'french press' aka plunger type gizmo which also works perfect without paper. in emergency can use a sock.

Using a screen is definitely an option. Leaves a little more foam which is not a big deal.

A consideration is that paper filters out much of the Cafestol. I personally don't think cholesterol is bad. Some think somewhat higher cholesterol helps produce needed hormones.

Doi Tung have a very efficient device that consists of a mug sized/shaped to with a mesh filter in the base. Put coffee grounds in the mug, pour on water, steep for four minutes, place the device on top of your mug/cup and it drains out of the device. A fresh coffee in no time, easy to clean and no paper to throw away. Voila.

You can get them pretty much anywhere. Rimping, Daiso, Tops, Tesco, Hillkof.... Just look in the coffee sections of any of the groceries and they should have one.

Thanks folkguitar, this helps. I've been here nearly a year and never noticed Daiso, despite having gone in each of those Centrals half a dozen times or more. I'll go there if this is the closest one after reading other replies.

BeauThai, thanks for the Hillkof mention, I had not heard of it until now.

Brommers, thanks for the Doi Tung idea.

If "anywhere" were true I'd have had it by now. :) I looked at 2 Rimpings, 1 Tops and Yok, etc. Just now hearing about Hillkof, thanks to both of you

Thanks for the courtesy of an acknowledgement-unusual on TV!

I think you will enjoy browsing Hilkoff - but I defy you to come away only with what you went looking for in this coffee- lovers aladins cave....!

Why am I not surprised it's unusual? ;)

I went to Hillkoff today and picked up my filter cone for 120. And no, i couldn't meet the challenge you defied; I exercised restraint and only bought coffee beans and ice cream. But I positively salivated over the Breville BES870XL! I have the previous generation, 860XL back in the States and have missed it dearly the past year, but a 29k, it's hard to justify the 33% import premium here. Indeed though, I had fun browsing the store.

Brommers, I also like the DoiTung contraption you described and will check it out this week when I visit the Nimman shop.

And thanks to those who recommended Daiso. I have been here a year and never noticed it but made my wait to the Airport one after I went to Hilkoff and left with 7 items, so that's a real nice find.

Jobin, I have a French press as well . . . enjoy them once in a while for a change.

My normal daily coffee method is to freshly hand grind beans brew them in an Aeropress. But for days when I feel like a 2nd cup, I still hand grind, but I'd rather just skip the Aeropress and do manual drip. So that's the reason for this thread. Thanks everyone.

May not be to your taste but I add cardamom seeds (habit picked up in Saudi) and cinammon to my brew- and, like you, I handgrind beans daily. Usually peaberry beans as, I am told, that round beans roast more evenly. Could be bullsh*t of course but I cant function without my morning brew.

I've tried them all over the years, from fancy espresso machines to simple drip coffee makers and always return to the kind that the OP was seeking. I used to find them at Rimping, but they were made from this brittle plastic that broke if dropped. I finally had my brother bring me a couple of the real original Melita brand cones that are made of a soft plastic that bounces when dropped.

To save a little paper [and baht], you can gently rinse the filters out and get as many as 10 uses out of it. I also prefer using the round basket type of paper filters, as they are easier to rinse, but haven't found them here so I have friends schlep them over for me.

Curious. While I have occasionally run into problems finding papers, I have never seen any lack of cones.

They do break from time to time, but are easily mended with super glue. In four years, I've gone through two cones.

My girlfriend made me throw away the first one because she said it looked bad in the kitchen. I think I put it back together three or four times.

Interesting. Do you drop them in after the brew or grind them along with the beans?

Grind them with the beans, but often add a little cinammon powder to the cappucino froth

Great, thanks for the recommendation. Cardamom seeds are added to my grocery list and I will try it soon.
