BANGKOK: -- Twelve percent of upper high school and vocational students have said that they intend to gamble in the upcoming World Cup soccer matches, according to an opinion poll conducted by the Gambling Problem Study Centre in cooperation with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation.

Director of Gambling Problem Study Centre Nuannoi Trirat said today that a total of 3,050 mathayom 4-5 students and vocational students in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Songkhla, Chon Buri, Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani were polled from May 30-June 8 about their viewpoints regarding betting for World Cup soccer matches.

The poll shows that most of the respondents agreed that it was all right to bet among friends without money being involved; 21 percent said that it was all right to gamble with money and 20 percent said it was all right to gamble online or with bookmakers.

The poll also shows that 28 percent of them intend to gamble in the soccer matches and 37 percent said they would bet to recoup their lost revenue; 16 percent said they would bet online and 14 percent admitted they suffered stress in previous sports gamblings and had to undergo rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, the National Polce Office said that a centre would be set up to deal with World Cup soccer gambling with emphasis on online gamblings.

Let's poll the political leaders....like the detained ones involved in the fistfight over betting on a card game.

Why not just legalize some form of gambling for the millions of Thais that do it already...don't make them criminals...protect them from the crime lords by government oversight...not to mention another source of revenue for the country...
