Rio airport staff go on strike ahead of World Cup opening

RIO DE JANEIRO: -- Ground staff at Rio de Janeiro's three airports will stage a 24-hour partial strike Thursday, the day Brazil hosts the opening match of the World Cup, their union said.

The workers vowed to maintain 80 percent service, but the strike will nevertheless raise fears of delays as a flood of football fans descends on the tourist-magnet city around the opening match in Sao Paulo and first match in Rio on Sunday.

A group of workers at Rio de Janeiro's three airports has declared a partial strike starting Thursday, the opening day of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, according to local TV-channel Globo.

A union of airport staff called for a partial strike in the Galeao, Santos Dumont and Jacarepagua airports, according to the media outlet.

Some 20 percent of the airports' workers will not work on Thursday.

The odds are that it won't matter as several of the stadiums being built / renovated to host the games are not finished.

They need the army in charge, that always works. Why doesn't the army just run every country and we will all be organised (threatened), happy (threatened) and definitely not corrupt (unless you're a high ranking member of the armed forces) just like in Thailand. Damm unions.

The Soccer World cup is run by FIFA and is awash with money.

Time for FIFA to share the spoils with the Workers.

Good luck to the Strikers in the World cup,

may FIFA score an own goal.

It would be a better excuse than the pitch didn't suit us, the weather didn't suit us or the Costa Ricans were an unknown quantity. wink.png

Sounds like the sound engineers gone on strike too.

Couldn't hear any of that singing, just hope they sort it out before the batucada folks come out with the drums, triangle, whistle and cuica tearing the roof down..

Funny, I thought it was FIFA complaining the Manaus pitch not up to par... but typical to see Eng supporters doing what they do best. Pfft!

From what i read,it is only 20% of them,so while slower it is not like they have all walked out and all flight's are cancelled.
