You're much better off getting a phone here in Thailand. Unlike with the oligopolistic ripoff market you have in Canada, nearly all phones here come unlocked. Also, I presume they're still a little cheaper here than the non contract phones over there but I haven't bothered to check in years.

If you still insist, then get a phone with GSM 2100 MHz for the broadest 3G compatibility. LTE 2100 MHz is also available but not broadly implemented yet, especially outside Bangkok.
