Sad and somewhat disturbed to report passing a (covered) dead body on Hangdong Road friday morning. Just before entrance to Big C heading towards Hangdong. The Police were in attendance and presumably awaiting an ambulance to remove the body. A motorcycle was mangled and underneath a car.

As usual on these occasions quite a large number of onlookers were gathered staring....at what? and taking the obligatory photos with smartphones etc. Further comment from me unnecessary, so sad but particularly so disrespectful to the deceased.

Looks like there was even an attendant who started a thread about on a forum.coffee1.gif

I wasnt an attendant. I just drove past. Perhaps I ve been lucky. In 10 years here thats the first time I ve seen a deceased body. It still gives a weird and depressing feeling. No need for flippancy.

Welcome to Thailand.

Yes. Interesting statistic. UK and Thailand official population around 65 million. A couple of years ago, there were 2700 deaths on UK roads. In the same year, the declared number of deaths on Thai roads was 27,000. Ten to one! Is it naivety, stupidity, or a belief that you ll be reincarnated. Probably a combination of the three factors.

wow, that is surprising. in many years i've been here, i honestly could not count how many dead bodies i have seen. i would guess more than 20. mostly victims of road accidents, but drownings as well. one accident involving a taxi, just outside of Bangkok there were 4 bodies scattered on the highway; including a child. it was very sad to have seen that. everything is so dangerous in Thailand. lives are lost often here.

I saw a person trapped under a bus near Sukhumvit 26, with a horde of people watching and doing nothing except one small office girl that ran across the road, I thought, to check on the unfortunate person. She squatted down, pulled out her camera, took a photo and ran back to the curb. I wonder if she asked him to smile or flash the peace sign?

Saw a report that there are in excess of one million motor bikes registered in the Chiang Mai province.

We use Hang Dong Road a lot and over 6 years have seen many accidents, nearly all motor bikes. Being a totally straight road encourages excess speed

and the Thais love of overtaking on the inside its a wonder there arn't more. RIP.

Hypocrisy deserves flippancy.

Well that's the reason....motorbikes.

If you drive for example for three hours anywhere in the uk, you will be lucky if you see 3 motorbikes.

If you do they will all be "big" bikes and risen by guys 40+ with many years of experience.

When you do see a bike accident in the uk, more often than not its on quiet country roads where they have opened up the throttle and they have lost control at bends or hit a car whose driver was pi$$ed up.

Plus, uk weather doesn't lend itself to bike riding as it does here.

Seen a rider in phuket trying to avoid a head on with a truck by trying to slide under it. ..sadly, that one drew a large crowd also.

Maybe all those three but you can add no fear of being pulled up by the police because if you are it is only going to cost you a couple of hundred baht and you're on your way.
