if they had a video ref for the aussie game the italian player would not of been sent off, there would not of been a penalty awarded, and maybe the italian who got the penalty with a dive would have been sent off.

rugby league here in australia uses video ref's and works well.

also i agree with playing the advantage rule, and bring back if no adavantage.

ref's are spoiling this world cup, pity as there has been some great football played.

lets hope that the quarter finals have the best ref's available and no more controversy.

also go england.

the standard of referees for such a massive competion is a disgrace.

so far i've not seen a good flowing game played. simply because the whistle hungry refs stop any momentum.

with the refs not being accountable to any body apart from the money hungry fifa. it beggars the question can and indeed would fifa favour any particular teams ie the big names or the home team.

remember back to the last world cup how spain and italy were knocked out after scoring perfectly good goals, but they happened to be playing the host nations.

the eventual winner will be decided by the refs and oficials.

bring back caluna and common sense.

Have to agree, theres too much action from the refs, any time a player goes down it appears to be an automatic yellow.

You may have opened a can of worms here, but it does appear odd that most of the last 8 are previous winners.

The last WC as u say was pretty strange in some respects.

btw didn't the elbowing Iteye get banned for several games ??

cannot believe it

i've seen a good game with a decent ref

spain versus france

possibly an italian ref

hope to see more of him, the game flowed quite well and his hand was not glued to the yellow card

he actually showed common sense, and after a couple of dodgy tackles he made sure that the two players shook hands before the game resumed.

Well said opothai.

Thats exactly my point when you are fouled the ref should give a free kick...thats the punishment, if he (the ref) feels theres more to it then OK give a yellow. Thats just not happening this time round.

Everybody in every team seems to have this ability to simulate.

Ghana were the delightful exceptions.

Sod off Brazil, and C'mon England. :o

when did that happen? It was announced yesterday that it was to be Horacio Elizondo, an Argentinian :o

I hope in the future Fifa will have video replays during game

If my memory serves me right, in some of the stadiums they show them on a big screen. But the match officials had to make sure the coach's didn't look at the replays, otherwise it could have fuelled arguments !!! Craaaaazy :o

we were watching last night on itv, although playing a bit of poker at the same time, and we were convinced it was the same ref as the spanish game, maybe wishfull thinking.

as i said earlier i thought it was an italian ref for the spanish game but not 100%.

all the same i hope the ref we get is not trigger happy with the cards.

Just checked again and it definately is the Argie. If memory serves me right, he was also the man who sent Beckham off in 2000 when Manchester United played Mexico's Necaxa in the World Club Championship in Brazil. :D

This is him http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/ref/...DO_Horacio.html

And here is the refs for the other games http://worldcup.uk.msn.com/fixtures/quarterfinals/

The refs are ridiculous at the WC. What is the point of this headset and who is using it....? Blatter barking some FifaMafia orders ? Poll with 3 yellows and the ITA-AUS ref with the penatly kick (headset anyone ?) are some of the worse, and of course POR-NL.

Some (official!) stats:

Germany-Argentina

Fouls 23-32

Yellow 3-4

Red 0-1

Spain-France

Fouls 29-23

Yellow 1-3

Italy-Australia

Fouls 17-26

Yellow 3-3

Red 1-0

Portugal-Netherlands

Fouls 10-15

Yellow 9-7

Red 2-2

This is a minimum of THREE times more cards per team per foul then any of the other games...

IMHO the above shows CLEARLY that Mr. Ivanov was out of his brain and should NEVER EVER be a referree in an international game again. "Blatter said: The referree should have gotten a yellow card". What will the FifaMafia DO about this. The absolutely spoil the WorldCup this way.

Please note that I think Holland did not deserve to win, van Basten does not do what he is doing (van Bommel out, Heitinga in, Vennegoor of Hesselink way to late, leaving Boularouz with his yellow in a game like this. Not bringing Davids...)

But at least the should have gotten a fairer chance...
