I do not live in Nongkhai but I would hazard a guess that the reason is the same as most ex-pats who live in Isaan.....their girlfriends or wife's were born there and wanted to live near their family's. Lol

That may be the reason, most farang came to Isaan, but I know a few who moved here on their own, and then met their girlfriend here, or in some cases are still living alone, I also know of some who broke up with their girlfriend/wife, or they died on them, and they decided to stay. And I'm not talking about teachers. Isaan is a pretty nice place and once you get to know it, and if you aren't a bar fly or beach bum, you realize it's not a bad place to live.

Hey isaangeorge, I did say "most ex-pats"...lol

I live in Isaan myself, although down in Korat, and yes it has some things going for it but then so does the south and the north of Thailand, it all depends on your tastes and requirements.

Thank you for all suggestions ;)

I also guess that's a reason for some expats

though there might be some other factors which also drives Nongkhai to be one of the world's best destinations for senior citizen.

And that's what my production is looking for ;)

Out of interest sasiwan...........just who or what denotes Nongkai as one of the worlds best destinations for senior citizens?

Many years ago Nong Khai was listed number 7 (as per AARP Magazine) as one of the world's top destinations to retire. Based on 8 or 9 categories such as access to medical care, safety, air quality, cost of living and so on.

It was in 2004 or some time not sure of the exact date at the moment. It continues to come up on websites and such but I do believe many of the reasons no longer ring true.

So for the OP you are about 10 years behind any current information in Nong Khai being a Senior Citizen Retirement Spot. Perhaps your production crew would be better put to use on highlighting some of Nong Khai's tourist spots, temples, and surrounding agriculture programs instead.

Have lived in Nong Khai for the past 5 years and can not for the life of me think why people in their right mind would specifically pick it to retire. Is it a terrible place to live? No. But if somebody can give two reasons to specifically move and live here....I would be most

Heres the list as the article says "from a few years ago"....like maybe 10 or 15 years ago. It was published in the AARP Retirement magazine (US based)...

The Top 15 Best Places Where to Retire in the World

1. Costa Del Sol, Spain
2. The Cinque Terra, Italy
3. Provence, France
4. Boquete, Panama
5. St Vincent & the Grenadines, Caribbean
6. County Lare, Ireland
7. NONG KHAI, Thailand
8. Crete, Greece
9. Ambergris Caye, Belize
10.Tunis, Tunisia
11. Algarve, Portugal
12. Cayman Islands, Caribbean
13. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
14. Paphos, Cyprus
15. Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Nong Khai........has long past being a retirement hot spot. In my opinion.

Gotta laugh when a Thai reporter asks a simple question and a bunch of you start trying to mock them cause you think you know better.

I was not mocking him krisb, I simply asked where he got the ridiculous idea about Nong Khai and he could not or would not answer the question to which I then stated I would not move up here. How is that mocking?

To be honest I would put money on the fact that the majority of people in the world who are not regular Thailand holidaymakers have not even heard of Nong Khai....I certainly hadn't until I visited Thailand for the first time. And now that I do know of Nong Khai and have indeed visited the town myself I am even more sure that I wouldn't live there.

I think I ought to add something to my last post before I start getting moaned at.

I am in no way saying there is anything wrong with the town for those that have chosen to live there, but I am saying that there is nothing that attract's me to move there myself....lol

The reporter states there must be a reason that drives Nong Khai to be one of the worlds top retirement destinations. I have not looked again but the article they are basing this assumption on is at least 10 years old. Nong Khai is my current home town, I live and work here, but in no way would I consider it in the worlds top retirement destinations.

The OP has done no research on the matter other than google Nong Khai and coming up with a decades old article. If anybody can list 5 reasons Nong Khai should be listed as one of the Worlds top retirement places I will gladly offer an apology to the OP and delete my post (if possible).
