Visa question

Featured Replies

Hey all. I have a question about visas. I'm an Irish citizen currently living in dubai. I have been living in and out of thailand for the past 4 years usually I just got my visa stamp on arrival. My fiancée is thai and we now have an 8 month old baby boy. I have decided to make the move to thailand full time to be with my family. I am currently doing a TESOL course here in dubai and plan to become a teacher in bangkok. Which visa should I be applying for before I come ? I do not want to get the visa on arrival as this is only valid for 30 days. If I am making the move over I would prefer to do everything by the book and not cause any problems for myself later on . Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

When the baby is born and you have the birth certificate naming you as the father, you could try to get a non-O visa as the father of a Thai citizen. But not sure how strict they will be in Dubai.

You could legitimize the child after birth and become the legal father, see: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/381917-how-to-gain-parental-rights-as-a-father/

Than you would be able to get extensions of stay, if you have an income of 40,000 a month OR 400,000 in a bank account in Thailand.

But as you want to work as a teacher you might not meet the financial requirements. Best might be to find a job and apply for a non-B visa abroad with paperwork from the school. That might require getting a tourist visa first or visa exempt entry and then find a job and apply for a non-B in a neighboring country.

I hope you have a university degree, otherwise you can not work at a regular school.

Since you have a Thai child you could get a single entry non immigrant O visa. You will need their birth certificate and a copy of their house book registry.

If not then a tourist visa would be the next best choice.

But unless you have residency in the UAE you may not be able to get a visa of any kind at the consulate in Dubai. See: http://www.thaiconsulatedubai.com/default2.aspx?language=EN&entry_key=M3S1&item=M3S1&menu=M3&

Do you plan on getting married soon? Once married you could get a one year extension of stay based upon marriage. You would need 400k baht in a Thai bank in your name only for 60 days or 40k baht income. You can get work permit an work with this extension.

You can also get an extension based upon being the parent of a Thai child but you would need to be the legal father of you child by way of legitimization.

You can also get a 60 day extension of stay to visit your child.with just the birth certificate and house book.

If he's employed in the UAE, he should have no problem. When I was working there I would either travel to Thailand using the visa exempt entry or get a tourist visa for longer stays. When I was ready to retire I also got a Non-Immigrant O-A from the consulate in Dubai. Generally, the consulate in Dubai was easier to deal with than the embassy in Abu Dhabi, although I used both at different times for tourist visas.

He might be required to get a letter from his employer confirming his status and salary scale ... best obtained before resigning. For the O-A I also got a clearance from the police and the medical report endorsed by the Ministry of Health.

Did you look at the webpage that I posted the link to that states this "Photocopy of UAE Residence Visa with minimum 6 months validity from the date of travel."

You should also note I said might.

Hey guy , thanks for all your answers. Was helpfull to know that there might be able to get a Vida because of my child. I don't have residency in Dubai , I'm here on a holiday visa. Had a problem with a previous employer and left after his false promises of making a visa for me. I eventually quit. I've bow decided I don't want to live in dubai and I want to live back in thailand with my family. I hope I don't get have a problem getting a visa. Do any of ye guys know the best way to find work in Bangkok ? I will have a TESOL cert but would be open to doing any work. I'm an Electrician by trade but I know I can't do this in Thailand. I need a job that pays half decent so I can bring up my son well. I can't afford to take on some backpacker job that only pays 25,000 a month as I could never support my family on this

Irishdave32 you have gone from planning to become a teacher in Bangkok to considering a backpacker job for 25,000 baht. That would be illegal in Thailand you need a work permit that I doubt you would get.

Hey..no sorry I think you have read it wrong. I was saying I can't do some sort of backpacking job in bangkok..if I was single and just looking for beers money it would be fine. I was saying the opposite. I don't want I job like this. I can teach English when I arrive. But I would obviously take another job if the salary was higher as I will need a decent income to support my family . I'm not looking for s short term job as I'm making a full time move to thailand and would like to start a new career which I can build on. Sorry if my post read differently.

As an unqualified teacher, you can expect something like 30,000 a month, but not much more.

Its not a lot when I have a family to feed. I will have to work 2 jobs. Are there other jobs that can be done in bangkok for westerners. 30,000 just is not enough to survive in bangkok

A lot of Thai families live on 15,000 a month.

But unless you have special skills, you will not easily get a job offering more than 35,000 a month. Unless they have a reason to hire a foreigner who want a higher salary than a Thai, you will not get hired. It is all about what you have to offer an employer.
