Doctor, doctor

Featured Replies

I'm looking for recommendations for a doctor in Bangkok. I have a medical complaint for which I would normally speak to a GP in the UK about. Have been to Yanhee Hospital before and that seemed very efficient but was wondering if anyone could recommend one they've used. Thanks

Happy to advise but you will have to give some more information, medical care in Thailand is pretty specialized and not many good GPs about, and virtually none with training abroad. So usually best (and quite easy) to see a specialist. What type of problem? And where in Bkk do you live?

I think it is a boil. I got a reply from a doctor saying that it needs to be an emergency really but all I need to do is see a GP to know how to treat it and any medication I might need.

I that case almost anywhere would do. I would probably go to the nearest government district hospital or health center for something like that.

it may need to be lanced/drained.

Again, if I knew where in Bkk you live I could be more specific.

Thanks Sheryl.

I'm based in Ratchapruek/Bang Kruay area. Out west of the city.

@Sheryl do you need to make an appointment with a doctor at a govt. hospital or health centre?

No, can just show up but usually need to do so first thing in the morning and there can be long waits. There are two pretty good private hospitals near you that are not too expensive as private hospitals go:

Thonburi 2 Hospital - on Borromchatanee just west of the ring road http://www.thonburi2.com/

Chao Phya Hospital - on Borromchatanee about 1-2 kms west of Pinklao http://www.chaophya.com/web_eng1/

Thonburi 2 is probably the closest to where you are.

If you go to a private hospital, register at the reception area to get a patient number then go to the Surgery clinic and see whomever is on duty, any general surgeon can easily handle this. Tell them you have an "abscess", which is the medical term for boil as they won't know what you mean by boil.

If govt hospital, just tell the nurse "abscess" and she'll direct you.

Thanks so much for the information Sheryl.

Any ideas on cost? I know it's a little bit like licking your finger and sticking it in the air but I just want to know if I should start stockpiling tins of beans now or if it'll be affordable..

I would guess doctor fee anywhere from 500 - 2,000 baht depending on if they have to lance the boil. If they prescribe antibiotics, will be cheaper to buy them yourself at an outside pharmacy, they are OTC here. Just make a note of what was prescribed, smile and tell the cashier you already have it. The mark-up at pharmacies in private hospitals is often more than two fold.
