Group of Death

Featured Replies

Its official, Barak Obama has just told his people that their soccer team in the world cup were in, and survived, the toughest group known as the "Group of Death" however i am sure that others would disagree.

I am American and love football. I thought the Americans played rather poorly in every game and were very lucky to have the results that they did. They really struggle passing and clearing the football. A lot of things needed to go right for them to advance but that is what makes football so much fun - shit happens, just like life, there is no fair.

Most Americans could care less about soccer. Not a real sport to most of them. American football, Baseball, Basketball and hockey rates way up the list for them while soccer is somewhere in the bottom.

Good for you thinking that, but i's not quite the same as it used to be, gladly. By the way, hockey has traditionally been labeled one of the 4 major sports in the US, but really, it's kind of a "niche" sport just like soccer. The fans are hardcore and loyal, but most people don't care much about hockey. It's thought of as a Canadian sport just like soccer/football is thought of as an English or foreign sport.

It's true that soccer is not the most important sport in the USA, but you know what group of national team fans, besides Brazilians, bought the most tickets to the World Cup? Americans. Yep.

It's true most Americans only pay attention to this sport during the World Cup but the national team has a very loyal and growing following.

Even in MLS, an admittedly inferior league, Seattle Sounders average over 40,000 fans per match. Yes, that's in the U.S. The derby (although in the USA they don't call them "derbies" they call them "clasicos" or "rivalry matches") match between Sounders and the Portland Timbers drew 67,000 fans.

So, yeah, Americans are watching the World Cup, and in great numbers. I watch the sport all the time, and watch probably close to a 100 matches a season, mostly the Premier League. But many of my friends are only paying attention to the sport and the US team for this month, and that's ok. It's nice to have some more fans from my country for the best sport in the world.

But make no mistake, the sport is rising in popularity quite fast, is the most played sport among youth in the country, and has more room to grow. We could see some truly great US talent emerging in the next 10-20 years that could really take our national team to the next level where winning the World Cup could could actually be feasible. We already have some solid international players right now, but I think the USA will have a larger talent pool in years to come, due to the rising popularity.

You'd also probably be surprised to know that attendance at MLS matches is, on average, more than hockey and NBA games. Although those sports do have more games, so that's a factor.

There are a lot of idiots, even on the sports channels, where their occupation is to like and talk about sports all day, who still make fun of the sport, but they just look stupid.

As for the "Group of Death," American journalists labeled our group as that because of Germany and Portugal, and the fact that we are no slouches and proved it, as well. English journalists rightly labeled their group as the Group of Death, and I'm sure Chileans, Spanish and Dutch labeled their group as the Group of Death, as well. I think all three of those groups deserved the title, really.

Interesting to see that all the American (North, Central and South) teams in all of those groups are through to the next round.

That's actually tosh, I am in the States at the moment and the bars are full of people watching every game, and they are particularly rammed for US games - and no it is not latinos or others.

It is the talk everywhere I go, I suspect the convenient timings have made it more accessible.

It's also being broadcast on NBC and ESPN, I think they paid $400 million for the rights this time.

MLS crowds are up and holding steady, new franchises are being added and the sport is now much more mainstream than when you last checked.

Except for Ecuador and Honduras.

Sadly the World Cup Funnies is not often updated ... so this will do ...

Mate, I do understand how a misunderstanding can occur.

That parady from the German Movie is fameous and there is a web based program where you simply use the clip and make the statement.

Here is the one for LadyBoys ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4wNeUJreJE

I've seen maybe 10 of them ... there are probably 100's if not 1,000's of them out there.

I apologise if that clip cause any discomfort or offence ... wai.gif

No problem, but the subtitle/acting/German language makes no sense, not in a funny or mocking way either.

Maybe you need to be non German speaker to "get it" ?
