Interior ministry shows progress of work under NCPO's policy

BANGKOK, 4 July 2014 (NNT) - The Ministry of Interior has reported the progress and results of its work in line with the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)'s policy to return happiness to the people.

Permanent Secretary for Interior Wiboon Sa-nguanphong said the ministry had pushed for important work and solved urgent problems which affected the general public according to announcements and orders issued by the NCPO. The ministry had also explained the situation to the people in all areas across the country, the official said.

In terms of security, Mr Wiboon said he had instructed all provinces to beef up investigation and set up checkpoints to screen weapons and drugs. All kinds of illegal gambling and drug trafficking had been strictly controlled, he added.

The ministry also tackled illegal logging and launched projects to protect forests. As for national reconciliation, it established reconciliation centers in the provincial level and invited opposing political groups to meet and and discuss ways to unify Thai people and reduce political conflicts.

The ministry's provincial units closely work with the army and the Internal Security Operation Command to ensure security and order nationwide.

INDEPENDENCE DAY
Junta figures and Yingluck among those absent

Supalak Ganjanakhundee
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Independence Day celebrations yesterday got underway at the US Embassy in Bangkok with minimal participation of junta figures. However, personnel from the ousted government of Yingluck Shinawatra and red-shirt supporters were in attendance.

Though Yingluck was invited to the party, she chose not to attend out of fear that her presence could be politicised, her close aide said. Instead she went to the cremation of late former science and technology minister Phiraphan Phalusuk.

Yingluck's former PM's secretary-general Suranand Vejjajiva, former finance minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong and former transportation minister Chadchat Sittipunt showed up at the July 4 event.

Core red-shirt leaders such as Chaturon Chaisang, Veerakarn Musikapong and Prateep Ungsongtham Hata also attended.

However, nobody from the ruling National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) was at the event, though PM's Office permanent secretary Panadda Diskul made an appearance.

Democrat Party figures were also conspicuously absent.

NCPO spokesman Colonel Weerachon Sukondhapatipak earlier confirmed that the US embassy did not invite any senior military officers to the celebration.

The embassy usually extends invitations to senior officials in government agencies, high-society figures and members of the diplomatic community.

The United States has consistently warned against military intervention in the political crisis prior to the coup.

Washington also cut US$4.7 million (Bt152.44 million) in military assistance to Thailand and cancelled many activities as well as joint exercises in response to the power seizure in May.

Other Western countries have also taken tough stance against the junta. The British embassy cancelled a reception to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's birthday at a Bangkok hotel on June 11 to reflect its opposition to the coup.

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) yesterday considered the draft of the provisional charter, said the ruling body's spokesman, Colonel Winthai Suvari.

The meeting at Army headquarters resulted in a slight adjustment to the document but details could not be revealed yet, he said.

Legal experts have been assigned to work on the draft, he said. Those who attended the meeting with NCPO chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha included his deputies, General Tanasak Patimapagorn, Admiral Narong Pipatanasai, Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong and Pol General Adul Saengsingkaew.

NCPO secretary general General Udomdej Sitabutr, General Paiboon Koomchaya, who is in charge of legal matters and reconciliation, and the NCPO chief legal adviser Wissanu Krea-ngam also attended.

Winthai said the final decision would be for Prayuth. However, the provisional charter would be submitted for royal endorsement this month and on schedule.

He said the NCPO did not discuss the charter on Wednesday as speculated by the media.
