Upgrade Memory for iMac

Featured Replies

Having trouble with iMac running slow and looking at the Activity Monitor it appears that I am running at capacity+ on my current 4Gb (2x2Gb) Ram. Looking at Apple Site it says I can upgrade to 8Gb (2x4Gb) in my Early 2009 (24 inch) model, but the Apple Store comes up with no memory available for model. Not sure if this means they are not making it any more or just not in stock. I've also tried the Apple shops in Tukcom (including the iCare service desk) and Central (Pattaya) but they have been of no help at all.

I've searched the internet and it would appear that I can use non-Apple memory for the upgrade but slightly wary of this.

Can anyone recommend a reliable shop in Pattaya (probably in Tukcom) that stock Apple compatible memory.

I'm sure the folk who are more knowledgable than me will be able to help but another good source of Mac info are the forums at macrumours.com

Thanks, I'll have a look.

I have the same problem on my iMac ( see here http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/734810-buying-computer-ram-advice-please/?p=7984119&hl=%2Bmemory

current iMac RAM 2x2GB ( 2 RAM slots ) =4GB

Idea - leave original 1x2GB RAM and install new 1x4GB =6GB

I wanted to increase my current RAM from 4GB to 6GB and from my research this below was the right new RAM to do the job

I could not , and still cannot find this RAM locally , every where I was told not available in Thailand sad.png or no longer made

I found some RAM on ebay ( not Kingston )

But not too sure about using this brand , so I'm still looking rolleyes.gif

Currently on my iMac I'm using an application called FreeMemory Pro , it seems to help a little smile.png

Thanks for that and the link to the earlier thread. Not looking good to find anything in Thailand. I've been looking at http://www.mrmemory.co.uk/all-products/4gb-204-pin-sodimm-ddr3-pc3-8500-1066mhz in the Uk which seems to meet my needs but I'm a little wary of import taxes, etc and also they don't quote for a specific brand, only offer a major brand depending on what they have available.

Hello All, I got 2 X 4's of 1333 DDR3 from Macsales, no problems,

sent in a blister pack envelop, no extra taxes added, mine was for

a Mini. You can use two 4's in you iMac, it won't show or use all, but

there was writings on using two of the same sticks so that it was

balanced, not using a 1 & 2, but use two 2 + 2 even if you can't use 4.

Read Macsales info.

Another useful link, slightly more expensive than my UK one but no risk of import duty or Vat being added on delivery. Think I'll ask if anyone has used them before in the more general tech forum.

Check out here quick, cheap no duty asked for:

I use them all the time, fast and cheap.

Sounds very good. Which shipping option do you use for Thailand, I've heard that DHL and other couriers normally involve import charges.

Hello All, USPS Priority or Express Mail, less chance of +++ tax.

You need to suss out if your iMac is loaded with DDR2 (200 pin) or DDR3 (204 pin) RAM. My older (2008) iMac (DDR2) can only take a maximum of 4GB RAM.
