Junta chief pleads for understanding and cooperation

BANGKOK: -- Military junta leader Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha addressed Friday night various significant and urgent matters ranging from international to domestic politics, economic, social and even student brawl issues in his efforts for the national reform to bring happiness to the people.

He pleaded with all exiled Thais to return home while appealing Thailand’s friend countries to welcome back the country to global stage as what his military junta’s is doing is constructive move to bring the country to real democracy.

Speaking on his weekly “Returning Happiness to the People” TV address last night, Gen Prayuth said the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) did not want countries which are Thailand’s friends to restrict the constructive role of the military or the NCPO, but to welcome Thailand back onto the world stage as this would benefit everyone.

He said it is undeniable that Thailand has been a strategic partner with the world’s superpower nations in Southeast Asia.

The US is Thailand’s oldest ally in the region. It is time for Thailand and its friends to look towards the future and find ways to avoid a repeat of previous incidents that obstructed the country’s democratic process, Gen Prayuth said.

He also urged other countries to stand by the Thai people and support their efforts to turn Thailand into a country full of hope, and to create lasting stability and security for Thailand, the region and the global community.

He said national reform is now in the second phase and more issues needs cooperation from all sectors of society to cooperate either they be politicians, government officials, the civic sector and all people from all walks of life.

He said the NCPO is now open for people to submit ideas, reasoning that it is difficult to lead to reform in the second phase and implementation in the third phase if each group have not crystallises their ideas.

He invited members of the public to apply to be members of the national reform council so that they can join in finding resolution.

On national budget, Gen Prayuth said the budget for 2015 fiscal year has been set at 2.575 trillion baht with emphasis on solving people’s problems such as lowering production cost in the farming sector, developing water resources, suppression corruption, and encouraging participation by all government agencies in budgetary allocation to avoid redundancies.

He said 300 million baht has been allocated for the National Anti-Corruption Commission to employ 700 more personnel to monitor and crack down on corruption.

On the universal health care scheme which currently becomes a hot issue of various state hospitals with some doctors voicing support for a proposal requiring patients to partly pay for the hospital bills, while others strongly opposed, Gen Prayuth said there was nothing change yet in the scheme but will improve.

He said the NCPO would think hard about social welfare, as it did not want to spend money on populist policies unnecessarily.

On social problem like student brawls or “Dek Vent (street motorcycle youth racers)” , he said the NCPO would soon summon these youths who caused social problems in a bid to get them to change their behaviour.

He said, “the government has wasted a lot of money in it but we haven’t been able to solve the problems permanently. For example, ‘Dek Vents’ or brawling students, I’d like to warn these people that if they haven’t realised what damage they cause to the country, they must face the law strictly.”

He said these problematic teens should improve themselves quickly and should find some jobs or complete their studies. The senior students or teenagers who guide juniors in the wrong way will be summoned to make understanding soon.

He also addressed on drug, crimes, gambling and quarrelling saying problems might have been caused by lack of family care.

He said if parents worked too much or dedicated too little time to their children, and let them fall under the influence of low quality media, their children would become victims.

getting nervous? no, not the thai soldier

Getting nervous about what?

Very simply not quite going the way they expected. I would think come the new year things will be looking quite grim overall.

In respect of requesting exiled Thai's to return home. Do you think it is a veiled request asking help from Thaksin? Lol (-:

I watched his televised speech last night. It was refreshing to hear a countries leader talk about basic issues that need addressing without feeling the need for rampant self aggrandizement while doing so. He talked about poverty reduction, assisting farmers, crime, drugs etc etc without sneaking in a little "I'm gonna buy liverpool FC with my own money for the kids bla bla", or " i just paid for all roads in the north to be resurfaced, from my own pocket". Prayuth also avoided bragging about an impending tour of 99 temples for some black magic ritual to try to overturn his bad karma. Like I said, it was refreshing to hear a leader put the countries wellbeing first rather than his own face, adoration and riches.

Did he mention anything about eradicating 'Western influence'? That's usually a crowd pleaser smile.png

The General does seem to be addressing the right issues and I wish him well. Interesting that one about exciled Thais to come home, I can only think of one, is he asking somone who abides in the Gulf to come home and complete his sentence? He did also mention forgiveness, perhaps he might be thinking of a pardon, but, then where would that leave a female whose fate will soon be sealed, I eagerly await next weeks bulletin where new light might be shed.

The General is preparing the country and it's people for a brighter future.

If things will be done, in his way, the country will be right on top of every aspect in a couple of years, and I pray to the Lord, there will be no future government, which will let it go back down the drain.

I suppose forming an opinion on how things are going depends a great deal on which side of the fence a person is on. From my side of the fence it appears things are going quite well. I think the veiled request as you call it is among other things simply requesting Thaksin to do the right thing by returning home and serving his prison sentence.

This guy is the best thing that has happened in Thailand in the 20 years I have been here. Knows what the problems are and unlike politicians of all parties is actually getting things done to solve them. He's bright, honest and well meaning. Last night he even said the sangha was going to get cleaned up of bad monks and corruption. Go general, keep calm and carry on, and stuff the moaners.

In Friday's announcement #97, the NCPO told the media not to criticize the NCPO, its staff and related persons. Failure means an immediate ban and legal action. Social networks cannot invite or interview former civil servants, scholars, former court employees, independent organizations or former judicial office workers in any manner that can confuse society, create or escalate conflicts, or lead to violence. Also, no one is allowed to post confidential government agency information, including video clips, images or voice recordings. Further all channels must broadcast and inform all viewers of all information issued by the NCPO.

And THAT says it all!

"For the use of the term "democracy" as a system involving distribution of political power in the hands of the public which forms the electorate, representative government, and freedom of speech,"

Now,now,we'll have none of that!

It is extremely refreshing to see the Junta follow through with their promise to involve the people. To be transparent and to show no hidden agenda. To embrace the population (may I dare say the voters) ideas and incorporate them in the reform. After all the reform is for their benefit, not the Junta's. This fact and this fact alone show the Junta are more democratic than the previous regime ever was.

You bet it does and I must thank you for bringing this up. You have inadvertently highlighted the cancerous propaganda and hate speeches full of contempt for the majority that the PTP and UDD have spewed previously to try to divide the majority of the population from the 7% that believe this rhetoric. This rhetoric did not fool the majority though and in fact they have welcomed the "holiday" from it.

So far the Junta's lack of amnesty bill is more successful at bringing peace and reconcilliation than the PTP's actual amnesty bill was intended to do. Well you couldn't really do any worse at bringing reconciliation than the PTP's reconciliation bill so in hind sight that is a bad example.

Well done Fang and thanks again for highlighting why reform, peace, transparency and most importantly a removal of an entity that embraced terrorism as a way to enshrine their ideas onto others are all important factors in the Junta's plan for true democracy.

I have saved you a seat on the train to reconciliation my friend right next to mine. Lets hope the train stops of at the TVF bar in Bangkok so I can buy you a reconciliation drink. Rest assured no bombs will go off while we drink it. We can thank the Junta for that!

And how do you reconcile that statement with this:

Order 97/2557 forbids all media operating in Thailand from interviewing and publishing the views of academics, former government office-bearers, retired judges or other people, including representatives from Non-Government Organisations, that may be construed as being critical of the NCPO or its representatives.

Great. So they have broken 1 principle so they can restore 15 in the future.

The PTP broke 14 principles with no intention of restoring them.

So far on the score board of democracy it is

Junta 1 (involving the people)

PTP 1 (free media….to an extent)

Interesting world you live in.

They did promise they will involve the people two months ago. They have followed through with that promise. The people will be involved in the reform. Ergo that world I live in is called reality.

That is also one more promise than Chalerm has ever followed through on. Remember he was the Deputy PM of the PTP.

I promise to arrest Sutjhep in a disguise. I promise to behead myself if thaksin doesn't come home. I promise to reform the labour issues and illegal workers…..and it goes on. And he wasn't sacked.

Well done Junta.
