BANGKOK: -- Thai students came away with four gold and a silver medal at the 45th International Physics Olympiad. It was held from July 13 to 21 in Kazakhstan.

The winners are scheduled to land in Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport this morning, where they will be welcomed with a reception.

The gold medallists were: Wich Sriprachayakul and Sorawit Wattanapenpaibul from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School in Nakhon Pathom; Thipayawit Cheunjit from Bangkok's Samsen Wittayalai School; and Korawat Preuksanusak from Bangkok's Triam Udom Suksa School. The silver medallist was Pasawi Manakul from Nakhon Pathom's Mahidol Wittayanusorn School.

Pornpan Vitayangkorn, director of the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST), said a total of 374 students from 85 countries participated in the competition, which was held in the Kazakh capital Astana. Of the participants, 43 won gold, 80 won silver and 89 won bronze medals, while 62 students were given honorary mention. China, Taiwan and South Korea won five gold medals each, while Vietnam, and Singapore garnered three each.

Im sure there were categories, for the life of me I cannot see why it wouldnt be listed.

It would Mean a lot to them im sure to be known what they achieved the medals for.

Woeful reporting detail, the paper wont get any medals for reporting thats for sure.

Gold medals go to the top 8% of participants. Given that each country gets 6 participants, 4 of them getting gold is pretty impressive.

Yes, that's the way these academic Olympiads work. The International Math Olympiad, probably more well know, works the same way.

Thailand may have problems with their education system as a whole, but they always produce a few top notch, world class competitors in these things.

Shame they can't do it on the track.

Thailand has some excellent runners; you often see them just after a crash!

Well done boys. They really need to make a bigger fuss of this at home to promote the fact when taught properly Thais can excel and perform just as well as the other elite countries. Great booster. I want to add to this that the youngest member of the IAEA international atomic energy association based in Austria is a 26 year old Thai female. After 2 successful applications she finally got a position 3rd time and she is from a poor family. She is now a fulltime nuclear inspector based in Austria.

Thanks for the link. I had a look at Theory Problem 1.5 (the orbital period of Encke's Comet) and was able to come up with the right answer without any major problems. It did help that I knew the correct formula to use. Strictly speaking the formula requires the mass of Encke's Comet to be input along with the mass of the Sun but as the Sun is so much more massive than the comet, the comet's mass can be ignored.

For those of you who are interested, the orbital period of Encke's comet is approximately 3.3 years.

I did this when I was younger in the US, was considered a "genius" by peers but these problems are at a high-level and these guys have special brains, probably smarter or higher IQ than anyone on this forum. Sadly (but good for them) they will probably use their brains to get work and residency in the 1st world.

The is only one verb 'to be'. That is the verb 'to be'. There are verb forms of 'to be', once conjugation commences.

Also, we: insist, insist on, insist that or insist upon. There is no 'insist in'.

Now look at your own writing, and leave the Thai alone! At least he communicates well, and writes comparatively well. Do you happen to write Thai well? I very much doubt it.

Did OZ or Netherlands even compete.. sometimes I wonder about these events.

Last time it was the gold medal for marching bands.. they had the lowest scores (Thailand) but because they were in their own category they had a gold medal. I am not saying this here is the same but one never knows.
